This is a Career! Our organization was founded in 1976 and has 50 full-time employees who all enjoy, stability and great benefits. Our team has been featured on National Geographic and Discovery Channel; so if you enjoy nature and adventure, consider a career with us! Pest Control Technician
No experience is required, because we provide a couple months of daily full-time paid on-the-job training. That's right, we will pay you to learn your job.
You might wonder how we can afford to offer such extensive training, right? The answer is, retaining our workers is part of our secret sauce. Our clients appreciate that our staff are experts. We never hire temporary or summer workers and our retention rates are unbeatably high. We're a great workplace and the result of our high retention adds value for our clients, because they get a well-trained and seasoned expert visiting their home. You'll learn how to safely set up ladders, how to inspect for signs of animals (like paw prints and fur), and how to perform basic repairs (like installing an animal-proof vent cover.
Please review the information below and let me know if you have the intelligence, strength and commitment to join our team. Although you don't need any prior experience with animals, experience with ladders, tools, safe driving and walking on roofs is preferred . Fully trained technicians inspect the roof of every home we visit, so you must have the strength and fitness to load our ladder on and off our trucks many times each day, position the ladder and climb up to the roofs. When you climb down, you may be carrying tools or other material with you. This is a job for someone handy, smart and fit .
Seeking three fit, smart, enthusiastic people to train as Field Technicians, full-time (permanent)
Our specialty is humane removal, exclusion and damage remediation for all species of wildlife that damage property or pose a threat to human health and safety in Illinois.
Our company is open everyday (365-days a year), but we each work a 4 to 5-day week. We rotate for days off, so you will need to work some weekend days. Most days begin around 7:30 a.m. and end around 5 p.m., but you will sometimes need to work later, like in the summer during our very busy season.
We guarantee an average of 40 hours per week year round. The summer season features overtime which is paid time and a half. You might work 50+ hours per week in the summer and closer to 40 in the winter.
40 hours per week of paid on-the-job training/apprenticeship, as well as classroom training for the first 4 to 5 weeks. This is a long-term position, not a "temporary or summer help' type of job. We invest so much training and development into our staff that we hope to retain them for a number of years. We strive for and achieve very low turnover, and because of this, we have an excellent and highly trained team.
We do not require that you have experience in our field, or knowledge about trapping or wildlife. Since our training program is very thorough, we will teach you everything that you need to know to do the job. The type of experiences and aptitudes that we are looking for are intelligence, good conversation skills, physical fitness (this job is physically rigorous. . .), skill with ladders and climbing/walking on roofs, skill with using a drill and other tools to install animal-proof chimney caps and vent covers, an excellent driving record, honesty, dependability and a friendly disposition.
You report for work daily to our office in Arlington Heights. This job is similar to being a police officer, because you wear our uniform (which happen to be good-looking--made by companies like Columbia and the North Face) drive our trucks, use our equipment, and our dispatchers send you out on wildlife calls.
Most of our calls are for squirrels or raccoons. You would set the appropriate humane trap, pick-up animals that are in traps, educate clients about the animal trapping process, take measurements and install chimney caps and other barrier methods on the clients' homes to keep other animals from entering.
The Down Side:
Since many kinds of animals are dangerously overpopulated, we are required by law to put some of the animals we catch to sleep. We dislike having to do this, because we are all animal lovers here, but it is the law, so we must. Apply for this job, only if you would be okay with following all laws, including that one.
Salary and Benefits:
Licensing alone is a two-month process. We pay an hourly wage and with all overtime new techs average between 31k - 35k per year. Time and a half pay for over 40 hours. We have paid vacation and outstanding medical, dental and vision insurance and 401k! There are many merit-based opportunities for advancement. We take your training and advancement very seriously, as mentioned before we are a growing company that is building a team that we can count on for a long time. Most of our managers started at Field Technicians and were promoted from within.
How to Apply:
Please read the information provided above, and respond with your name, the town you live in, your telephone number, your availability and especially why you feel you would be a good candidate for this job. You may include your resume as an attachment, but we don't require it during this stage of hiring, and will focus more on what you write about how your aptitude and experience fit in with what we are looking for. Please make sure to include your telephone number, so we can call you back for a telephone interview.
Additional Information about our Company:
We offer free lectures on wildlife to local libraries and schools through our partner not-for-profit organization. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our organization. I look forward to reading your submission, especially the part about why you feel that you'd be a good match for our company. Please make sure to include your telephone number in the body of your email. Please also know that we read only those submissions that contain a personal message. Resumes sent alone without a description about you will not be screened.
The Wildlife Technician Position is a lot like being a police officer; this means it involves interacting with the public and making important notes, therefore, we need to make sure that you are able to follow directions and communicate clearly. This is why we ask you to help us get to know you by including a personal message about yourself and your interest in the position.
*We humanely manage urban wildlife in the interest of human health and safety from an environmental sustainability perspective, with a love of nature, and a deep respect for all living things.*
