Northern Illinois Food Bank leads the northern Illinois community in solving hunger by providing nutritious meals to those in need through innovative programs and partnerships. Since 1983, food manufacturers, local grocers, corporations, foundations, and individuals have come together to donate food and funds, and evaluate and repack food for distribution to 800 network partners serving more than 60,000 hungry neighbors each week across 13 counties. Northern Illinois Food Bank is seeking a Vice-President of Operations.  The Vice-President of Operations will provide leadership and direction to accelerate growth through focused and effective strategic supply chain practices, and will serve as a full member of the executive leadership team providing a supply chain vision and business partnership. 

This individual will provide leadership and direction to accelerate growth through focused and effective strategic supply chain practices, and will serve as a full member of the executive leadership team providing a supply chain vision and business partnership. 

This role represents the unique opportunity to participate in the business strategy and organizational development of a growing company as a member of its senior management team. In addition to the responsibilities associated with the position outlined here, this individual will have the opportunity to impact the company through the introduction of strategic supply chain initiatives in customer service, planning, procurement and logistics. 

This position oversees distribution operations at Geneva, Northwest Center (Loves Park) and North Suburban Center (Lake County).

Oversight includes:  Inventory, Transportation, Warehouse Operations and Food Processing. 

Close partnerships include: Volunteer, HR, Food Procurement, Finance and IT teams.

Key responsibilities of the Vice-President of Operations include: 

  • Meeting and exceeding food distribution poundage targets and Feeding American compliance requirements
  • Identifying opportunities, developing strategies, presenting recommendations and implementing programs that will enhance distribution center operations effectiveness and service.  This includes, but not limited to, process improvements, technology enhancements, change management and training.
  • Ensuring operational strategy, practices and initiatives are aligned with the company’s business objectives and support the company’s growth strategy outlined in the strategic plan
  • Ensuring OSHA, DOT and food safety standards are met and adhered to.

  • Building an organizational culture that has a high sense of urgency, safety, commitment to value-added services and a sense of accountability.
  • Developing and leading the organization-wide operations planning process.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Warehouse, will oversee inventory planning & management.
  • Working closely with procurement and volunteer teams to align warehouse, customer service center, distribution centers and transportation team expectations and resources.
  • Instilling a climate of financial prudence across teams and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Providing a sense of vision and leadership across teams, engendering a spirit of teamwork and cross collaboration, championing safety, personal development and innovation.
  • Ultimately responsible for all distribution centers from a safety and facilities management perspective.
  • Responsible for leading organization-wide disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • In collaboration with safety committee, responsible for overall safety initiatives across multiple sites.
  • Providing analysis to optimize logistics network across service area and between distribution centers.
  • Analyzing and optimizing warehouse operations, including assessing and evaluating warehouse management technologies.
  • Responsible for inventory accuracy through monitoring of daily warehouse activities, cycle counts, inventory shortages and auditing of same to verify results.
  • Coaching team and constructing compelling development plans, pushing people to embrace developmental moves.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations, Supply Chain Management or equivalent in experience and tenure.
  • 10+ years in distribution, supply chain and logistics experience.
  • 10+ years in a leadership capacity in an organization with multiple sites.
  • 5+ years distribution management experience is a must.
  • Proven success in developing and managing budgets.
  • Knowledge of the complexity of the supply chain in the food industry, its impact in the food arena and on the Food Bank.
  • Hands-on experience across multiple facets of an Operations environment (grocery/food, manufacturing, consumer products). 
  • Experience implementing and working with warehouse management systems.
  • Excellent project management, team building, professional development and communication skills.
