Position Description:  Vice President of Philanthropy

Place in the Organization

  • The following positions report to this position:  Director of Individual Giving, Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving, Special Events and Promotions Manager, Volunteer Manager

 

Purpose:

The Vice President of Philanthropy will be responsible for: developing and implementing the fundraising strategy for Northern Illinois Food Bank in support of its current and long-term strategic objectives; achieving annual fundraising goals as well as capital campaign goals; effective management and development of staff engaged in all aspects of fundraising including capital campaign, individual giving, major gifts & planned giving, foundation & corporate giving, and special events and promotions. In addition, the Vice President oversees our Volunteer Program, including the recruitment, on-site management, and stewardship of volunteers. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and develops strategies and objectives of the Philanthropy team to support the current and long-term strategic objectives of Northern Illinois Food Bank. 
  • Oversees all aspects of fundraising including capital campaign, individual giving, major gifts & planned giving, foundation & corporate giving, and special events and promotions. Oversees all aspects of the Volunteer Program including recruitment, onsite management, and stewardship.
  • Provides professional expertise and direction in all aspects of fundraising and volunteer management to the CEO, philanthropy staff and Board of Directors.
  • Serves as a member of the Food Bank’s Executive Team. Provides organizational oversight and strategic direction.that drives a culture of teamwork by showing a commitment to working collaboratively across departmental boundaries to achieve goals and build cohesiveness, while valuing individual perspectives and contributions.
  • Provides forecast of contributions and growth strategy for maintaining and increasing contributions to the Food Bank.
  • Works with the CEO, Food Bank Team and Board of Directors to establish a presence in the community to increase the organization’s visibility as a funding source for potential, current, and past donors and volunteers.   Identifies opportunities and programs to engage new stakeholders, and maintains relationships with current and past donors and volunteers.
  • Collaborates closely with the Communications Team to develop marketing strategies that promotes the organization’s mission for donor and volunteer cultivation and stewardship.
  • Collaborates closely with the Operations Team to ensure all volunteers are properly welcomed, managed, thanked and are safe while onsite.
  • Directs the research and preparation of Corporate, Foundation and Government grants.
  • Oversees the donor and volunteer databases and champions the continued population and expanded use of stakeholder technology to support the needs of the organization.
  • Develops and oversees department budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills, Education and Experience:

  •  Ten plus years of experience in a fundraising and donor solicitation role with a demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising and stakeholder engagement goals. 
  • Direct experience cultivating, stewarding and securing donations at the five, six and seven figure levels from a cross platform of donors, including individuals and corporations / businesses.
  • Highly developed team working skills; 3-5 plus years must be in a management capacity with proven effectiveness in managing and developing high-functioning, successful teams. 
  • Experience in all areas of fundraising including:  capital campaign, individual giving, major gifts and planned giving, foundation and corporate giving, and special events and promotions.  Experience leading a Capital Campaign preferred.
  • Strong understanding of public relations, marketing and communications. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Membership in a professional fundraising association is expected and Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Suite as well as experience with a Donor Database.
