Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission is to lead the northern Illinois community in solving hunger by providing nutritious meals to those in need through innovative programs and partnerships.  Working collaboratively with a community of donors, volunteers and feeding programs, the food bank provides food across 13 northern Illinois counties each week. Northern Illinois Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has received Charity Navigator’s 4-Star rating for eleven consecutive years for its fiscal responsibility.

Purpose:

This individual will provide leadership and direction to accelerate growth through focused and effective strategic supply chain practices, and will serve as a full member of the executive leadership team providing a supply chain vision and business partnership. 

This role represents the unique opportunity to participate in the business strategy and organizational development of a growing company as a member of its senior management team. In addition to the responsibilities associated with the position outlined here, this individual will have the opportunity to impact the company through the introduction of strategic supply chain initiatives in customer service, planning, procurement and logistics. 

This position oversees distribution operations at Geneva, Rockford, Park City and Joliet. This position is based in the Geneva location.  

Oversight includes:  Food Procurement, Inventory, Transportation, Warehouse Operations, Food Processing, Customer Service and Facilities (Safety & Security)

Close partnerships include: Finance and IT, Volunteers, Programs and Human Resoruces

Key responsibilities of the Vice President of Operations include: 

  • Meeting and exceeding food distribution poundage targets and Feeding American compliance requirements
  • Identify opportunities, develop strategies, present recommendations and implement programs that will enhance distribution center operations effectiveness and service.  This includes but not limited to process improvements, technology enhancement, change management and training.
  • Ensuring operational strategy, practices and initiatives are aligned with the company’s business objectives and support the company’s growth strategy outlined in the strategic plan
  • Ensuring OSHA, DOT and food safety standards are met and adhered to
  • Building an organizational culture that has a high sense of urgency, safety, commitment to value-added services and a sense of accountability.
  • Develop and lead the organization-wide operations planning process.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Warehouse, will oversee inventory planning & management.
  • Work closely with procurement and volunteer teams to align warehouse, customer service center, Centers and transportation team expectations and resources
  • Instill a climate of financial prudence across team and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Provide a sense of vision and leadership across team, engender a spirit of teamwork and cross collaboration, championing safety, personal development and innovation
  • Ultimately responsible for all Centers from a safety and facilities management perspective
  • Responsible for leading organization-wide disaster recovery and business continuity planning
  • In collaboration with safety committee, responsible for overall safety initiatives across multiple sites
  • Provide analysis to optimize logistics network across service area and between Centers
  • Analyze and optimize warehouses operations, including assessing and evaluating warehouse management technologies
  • Responsible for inventory accuracy through monitoring of daily warehouse activities, cycle counts, inventory shortages and audit of same to verify results
  • Coaches team and constructs compelling development plans, pushing people to embrace developmental moves

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations, Supply Chain Management or equivalent in experience and tenure.
  • 10+ plus years distribution, supply chain and logistics experience.
  • 10+  plus years in a leadership capacity in an organization with multiple sites
  • 5+ years distribution management experience is a must.
  • Excellent project management, change management, team building, professional development and communication skills
  • Knowledge of the complexity of the supply chain in the food industry and its impact in the food arena and on the food bank
  • Hands on experience across multiple facets of an Operations environment (grocery/food, manufacturing, consumer products) 
  • Experience implementing and working with warehouse management systems.
  • Proven success in developing and managing budgets.
