3rd Shift-NON-CDL Driver

Summary/Objective 
Northern Illinois Food Bank is seeking a dependable overnight driver to pick up rescued food from our partnering Starbucks locations each night. This is an exciting opportunity to work towards ending hunger in our community that does not require a commercial driver’s license. Drivers will operate vehicles in a safe manner, collect food donations from locations along a route, inspect, count, and verify product, and ultimately, deliver it to feeding programs that benefit hungry people. Drivers will also maintain vehicle logs, product documentation, and provide support to a variety of warehouse functions when not on route. This is a great fit for someone looking for overnight and potentially weekend work. Drivers will work five days per week starting as early as 8:30pm. Divers are cross-trained on multiple routes to ensure coverage for vacations and absences. 

 Drivers will need to work independently, always keeping safety a top priority. Each night’s schedule will be a full 8 to 10 hours. There is no flexibility on work times, as the pickups must be made in the designated window of 9:00 pm-5:30 am. We are required to pick up 73 -stores every night, 7 days a week 365 days out of the year.  

Essential Functions  
 

  1. Show up for work on time every day you are scheduled 
  2. Provide advance-notice of any potential missed shifts 
  3. Drive to assigned stores, make pick-ups, and deliver food  
  4. Accurately disarm and set alarm at each location 
  5. Make sure locations are securely locked when you leave 
  6. Ensure food safety 
  7. Precool and maintain refrigerated van to 38 degrees 
  8. Take and record internal temperatures at all stores, inside the van, and upon delivery  
  9. Record all pounds onto MealConnect online platform 
  10. Record all required temperature checks and make results available to staff upon request

Required Education, Skills, and Experience  
 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must have at least a valid Class D License. 
  • Must be able to obtain a valid DOT Medical Card.   
  • Must not have any DUI’s or OVI's within the last 5 years or 2 in any 10 year period. 
  • 2 years driving experience a plus. 
  • Must not have any license suspensions within the last 2 years. 
  • No more than 3 moving violations within the last 2 years. 
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing. 
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language. 
  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  • Must be able to work flexible schedules including weekends and holidays, and be available to address operational issues by phone at all times.  

  

Supervisory Responsibility 
This position has no supervisory responsibility. 
 

Work Environment  

  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions. 
  • Exposure to residential and commercial areas. 
  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions while outside of the vehicle. 
  • Working nights and weekends from 7:30 PM to 5:30 am. Hours per week average 45 to 50 hours and include weekend and/or holiday work. 
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling various items up to a maximum of 70 pounds. 
  • Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop.

  • Ability to safely operate a forklift and pallet-jack.

  • Finger and hand dexterity to feel, handle, and operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms  

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. This position will work nights and weekends from 7:30pm to 5:30am. Hours per week range from 45-50 and include weekend and/or holiday work. 

  Position Location 

This position is based out of our West Suburban Center (Geneva) Location. 

  Travel 

Use of personal vehicle for travel is not required. This driving position uses a food bank vehicle.
