The Director of Pharmacy Services is responsible for the general oversight of the pharmacy services and operations. The Director coordinates the pharmacy operations to provide optimal services while complying with all the applicable policies, procedures, goals, and standards of the organization. He/She monitors and manages the implementation of departmental objectives, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance with local, accreditation, and certification requirements. The Director coordinates and promotes clinical and educational services for these areas so as to provide desirable patient outcomes through the use of safe drug therapies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Develops and administers operational and capital budgets for pharmacies.
  • Determines priorities for capital budget proposals based on overall needs keeping in mind what would benefit all pharmacies
  • Oversees that manager(s) are working to stay within approved operational budgets
  • Provides guidance to manager(s) in how budgets are to be maintained especially since cost sharing may benefit all.
  • Directs the purchasing of pharmaceuticals from approved vendors. Interviews vendor personnel and monitors all purchasing functions for contract compliance. Makes sure that vendors keep each pharmacy as a separate entity and that contract pricing is administered properly based on pharmacy type (i.e. non-profit vs. profit or acute vs. non-acute institutional vs. outpatient.)

  • B. Develops short-term and long-term objectives and activities for the department(s) in conjunction with the manager(s).

    C. Directs the development and implementation of policies and procedures that promote appropriate and safe medication dispensing and use.
  • Directs the development of policies for medication storage and preparation at all facilities serviced by the pharmacies
  • Coordinates the drug distribution to all areas serviced including a review of the distribution records for completeness and accuracy.
  • Directs and coordinates pharmaceutical hazardous material handling per OSHA guidelines.

  • D. Coordinates pharmacy staffing and evaluations in conjunction with the manager(s).
  • Works closely with manager(s) in recruiting, interviewing, promoting, and discipling pharmacy staff.
  • Promotes cross training that will benefit all pharmacies.
  • Develops and updates job descriptions and performance standards.
  • Establishes staffing needs in the areas of responsibility and productivity standards that benefit all working within the pharmacy.
  • Evaluates and counsels pharmacy manager(s).
  • Assists manager(s) in evaluating and counseling staff. Provides guidance for personnel-related decisions and helps initiate required actions.
  • Advises pharmacy manager(s) on how to have effective staffing using multiple job types.
  • Manages all pharmacy services in the absence of the manager.

  • E. Directs development, implementation and maintenance of clinical services of all pharmacies.
  • Coordinates development of policies and procedures for clinical pharmacy services.
  • Oversees clinical pharmacy coordinators/specialists responsibilities at all facilities or all areas of the facility.
  • Provides for accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to the professional staff.
  • Assists in providing clinical information and clarifications to physicians and nursing practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives and needed.
  • Coordinates the monitoring of drug therapy regimens. Assists in the determination of adequate computerization for the pharmacy(s) for screening of drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, adverse drug reactions and appropriate drug therapy.
  • Helps provide for the educational needs of the health care professionals and patients.
  • Encourages professional development of department personnel.

  • F. Participates in and/or evaluates the performance/quality improvement activities of the pharmacies.
  • Attends meetings participates in committees as appropriate and necessary.
  • Consults with administrators, directors of nursing, managers, etc. on all management related issues related to pharmacy services.
  • Coordinates necessary pharmacy services with other Resurrection Health Care departments as needed.

  • G. Assures compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services keeping in mind all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulation including but not limited to IDPH, HFAP, and IDPR.
  • Supports and promotes the mission and core values of RHC.
  • Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation and attendance and in-services, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations
  • Understands, articulates, and ensures compliance with the National Quality Forum Patient Safety Practices as well as patient safety practices that may be mandated by any regulatory agency.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    Current Illinois licensure as a professional pharmacist. Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy with a Master Degree in Pharmacy preferred, or Masters in business or healthcare administration.
