Sr. Web Developer

Classified As seen in Shaw Media

FMA is an educational association, charitable foundation, tradeshow producer, & publisher currently located in Rockford IL; however, the office is moving to Elgin IL in December, 2016.

We are looking for a full-stack Sr. Web Developer to help grow & support our websites.

We use modern, object-oriented PHP in the Laravel framework, with MongoDB and MySQL on the back-end and Bootstrap and jQuery on the front-end. We also work with WordPress & Drupal, and our sites mostly run on Linux & nginx.

It's a relaxed environment with flexible work hours & partial remote work opportunities, but we expect quality work & love to build great products. You'll work with internal product owners as well as some external partners, but we aren't an agency. Our top publication site, thefabricator.com, has experienced 30% annual growth in unique visitors each of the past two years & our industry outreach effort, mfgday.com, boasted over 2,500 events last year. Join us to make a difference on a small, but impactful, team.

In this job, you will: design, develop, test & implement web applications in PHP, HTML, CSS, & JavaScript; design and maintain databases in MySQL & MongoDB; lead projects within the web department; provide detailed specifications & serve as a technical resource for coworkers; work with a designer & digital marketing manager to continuously improve UI/UX; monitor website performance & make improvements as needed; implement SEO techniques to improve & maintain rankings; fix bugs & address other issues submitted to the web help desk.

The successful candidate will: write top-notch HTML, CSS, & JavaScript; have a solid understanding of object-oriented programming; understand relational database concepts & have some exposure to MongoDB or another NoSQL database; have experience with Laravel or other MVC frameworks; have working knowledge of WordPress, Drupal, or other content management systems; have excellent organizational & communication skills; manage projects effectively & understand the principles of agile software development; work well under limited supervision & exercise independent judgment.

We require a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Computer Science or related field & four years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Bonus Points:

  • Git - Working on a team requires more than just git add and git commit
  • Unix Command Line - We work on Macs & host our sites on CentOS
  • Redis or other caching solutions - You like making sites fast

FMA offers a competitive salary & benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life, & disability insurance; flexible spending plans; 401(k) plan; 529 plan; generous paid holidays, vacation, & sick time; company-wide incentive plan; paid professional development & memberships; tuition reimbursement; & fitness reimbursement.

We encourage you to visit our websites: fmanet.org; thefabricator.com; fabtechexpo.com; mfgday.com; nutsandboltsfoundation.org.

To apply, send a cover letter with your salary requirements & resume to: hr@fmanet.org.
