Under the direction of the Pharmacy Director, Manager, Supervisor and/or Pharmacists, prepares and distributes prescriptions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greets patients and customers for prescription drug fills, may take orders via: telephone or electronically. Verifies patient and doctor information is complete and accurate and confirms insurance coverage. Enters prescription fill information into database for processing.


  • Prepares and packages medications for dispensing.. Retrieves, counts, measures, and compounds drugs under the direction of the Pharmacist. Applies labels to packaged medication for Pharmacist review.


  • Contacts third party payers to verify coverage. Processes and submits claims for payment. Investigates claims that are rejected and starts the prior approval process when necessary.


  • Performs cashiering and billing activities. Reconciles the cash register and processes banking deposit forms on a daily basis. May run reports to reconcile payments from insurance companies.


  • Follow-ups up on unclaimed prescription orders. Returns unclaimed prescriptions to pharmacy for re-stocking and reverses payment to third party payers when applicable.


  • Performs inventory control of drugs and pharmacy supplies for the pharmacy department. Conducts inventory checks to help ensure stock does not fall below required levels, confirms items are properly stored, and reviews expiration dates to rotate or retrieve items according to their date.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or G.E.D. required

One year of pharmacy experience in a hospital and/or retail setting preferred

Computer Skills

Knowledge of computers and point of sales systems (POS)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Illinois Pharmacy Technician License required. If not licensed, may consider hiring with the stipulation that the license must be received within 60 days of hire.

Certificate by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board required. If not certified, may consider hiring with the stipulation that certification must be received within 2 years of licensure.
