Basic Skills Facilitator

Title:           Basic Skills Facilitator  

Program:    Educational Services

Location:    Cook County Jail, 2600 S. California, Chicago,

                    North Lawndale ATC, 2839 W. Fillmore, Chicago                   

 

Using the Safer Basic Skills methodology as the backbone of classroom procedures, the Basic Skills Facilitator stimulates scholastic improvement to Safer clients who reside at the all-male Adult Transition Center or who are detained at the Cook County Jail. The Facilitator is expected to confidently guide the participants in their efforts to achieve basic competence in mathematics, reading and writing as well as subscribe to and utilize the peer and group learning techniques inherent in the internal teaching system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Based on the individual students’ varying needs, abilities and interest, provide instruction and support to court-involved adults who are seeking to obtain their GED in an unstructured and non-traditional academic environment.
  • Stimulate scholastic improvement in our client population.
  • Guide class participants in their efforts to achieve basic competence in mathematics, reading and writing.
  • Address conflict management, attention span, impulse control, habit formation and other barriers to learning through a vigorous, interactive method of instruction.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement and document training activities leading to increased academic proficiency and accelerated socialization of program.
  • Assess each participant’s academic and social needs and develops individual service strategies to effect positive change in areas of need.
  • Actively recruit candidates for program participation through the solicitation of appropriate referral sources.
  • Conduct orientation for participants.
  • Document all activities pursuant to the interviewing, assessment, orientation and training of program participants.

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent communications, computational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Ability to maintain composure under stress and to employ insight and creativity in interpersonal communication. 
  • Prior experience working with individuals with criminal records a plus.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Two years experience working with population; prior training or facilitation experience.
