Laboratory Manager

Job Description:

The Laboratory Manager is the primary liaison between the services group, logistics, and operations at the facility.  Communicates with all laboratory environmental customers and is responsible that the laboratory functions, in the most efficient manner, in producing reliable analytical data.  Manages the overall functioning of an industrial laboratory including quality management of sampling, environmental and analytical testing related to laboratory operations.  

 

 

Responsibilities include but limited to:

 

  1. Evaluate environmental and other regulatory changes that may enhance and/or strengthen the customer base, including changes in customer’s current environmental permits;

  2. Coordinate along with the Chief Chemist, Terminal staff, and Laboratory personnel in meeting sampling, analysis, regulatory deadlines,  and QA/QC regulatory requirements  in order to maintain the customer base;

     

  3. Train Laboratory personnel in conjunction with the Chief Chemist;

     

  4. Interact with current clients to advise on regulatory or non-compliance issues on a regular basis;

     

  5. Provide price quotes and testing to new clients and current clients;

     

  6. Hands-on experience of the procedures performed by the laboratory and the ability to perform said tests when personnel and/or time restraints requires assistance;

     

  7. Trouble shoot procedures, instrumentation, and equipment;

     

  8. Evaluate employee performance, manage hiring and termination, if required, in cooperation with Laboratory Services Group Manager and Human Resources;

     

  9. Manage to established budget objectives; report on performance; participate in budget development and planning;

  10.  

    Prepare and co-ordinate with accounting the invoices for environmental clients and special projects with the Laboratory Service Group Manager,

     

  11. Procure, in tandem with the Chief Chemist, the necessary consumables and other expenditures used in the performance of the laboratory testing,

     

  12. Evaluate the costs of adding new testing equipment and recommend new equipment, procedures, and protocols that might enhance Laboratory productivity, safety, and/or quality;

     

  13. Evaluate new product testing requirements for Terminal clients, and develop protocols for Laboratory development;

     

  14. Maintain compliance with company HSSE policies and procedures

 

Experience Requirements:

 

A minimum of 10 years laboratory management in a comprehensive environmental laboratory and/or industrial laboratory

 

15-20 years of analytical chemistry testing both classical and instrumental methods

 

Specific experience in environmental testing as defined by Standards Methods for the Evaluation of Water and Wastewater, SW 846 Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste and relevant ASTM methods

 

Knowledge of IEPA and USEPA regulations for field sampling, test procedures for instrumentation and methods required for the analysis of water, wastewater soil and solid wastes

  

Knowledge of regulatory compliance aspect of data and reporting time frames

 

Proficiency in preparation and hands-on use of most laboratory instrumentation including the GC, ICP, AA, classical and physical chemistry

 

Must have good communication skills in coordinating a multi-tasking, multi-functioning environmental and raw materials testing laboratory

 

Must have good people skills; Customer friendly; Able to represent lab results with customers and regulatory agencies

 

Flexible, responsive to demanding, unpredictable schedule driven by facility and customer needs

 

Remain continously creative & resourceful                                   

 

Quality process knowledge, QA, statistical analysis of results

 

ISO/NELAC certification experience beneficial

 

 

Qualifications:

 

A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in sciences

  • The work environment includes both office and industrial plant settings
  • Exposure to industrial noise, wet floors, odors, fumes, moving mechanical parts and industrial traffic
  • Specified PPE required in operational areas
  • Possible exposure to domestic wastewater, airborne dust and chemicals associated with a laboratory
  • Moderate safety risks associated with a light industrial environment

 

Physical Demands:

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

  • Walking and some climbing of stairs & walkways required
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, crouch, reach and climb
  • Repetitive motion of the wrist, hands and/or fingers
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. occasionally
  • Sitting for extended periods of time working in front of a computer screen
  • Standing/walking for extended periods of time
