The Senior Community Program Assistant (Temporary) contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by serving as an important rung of the Career Ladder program which creates opportunities to inspire conservation leadership in diverse youth. The Senior Community Program Assistant provides supervision for youth volunteers and Community Program
Assistants at the zoo and on field trips, assists in the enforcement of program rules, maintains quality of zoo interpretation and assists with other Career Ladder programs as needed.

The primary job duties for this position include:
  • Provide supervision for Community Program Assistants and Youth Volunteers at the zoo and on field trips. Assist in the enforcement of program rules and ensures quality of tasks completed.
  • Develop scheduling for Youth Volunteers and Community Program Assistants on a daily basis.
  • Ensure effective communication between Youth Volunteers, outreach staff, and Conservation Leadership Program Supervisor.
  • Assist in maintaining quality of Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) interpretation.
  • Assist in developing and conducting training and team-building programming for Community Program Assistants and Youth Volunteers.
  • Assist with other Career Ladder and community outreach programs at the zoo and off-site.


Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following:
  • Minimum one year of college or equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Ability to take initiative to ensure task completion without close supervision required.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.
  • This temporary position requires incumbents to have the ability to work non-standard hours such as weekends and holidays.

The desirable qualifications for this position include the following:
  • Two years within the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) at Brookfield Zoo or two years of experience working directly with teens in volunteer or mentorship settings desired.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
