Programmer (Seasonal)

As a Programmer (Seasonal), with Sr. Mgr., Business Integration Projects and Sr. Technical Lead, you will write programming code and test code to enhance and expand the Chicago Zoological Society's web site presence and e-commerce initiatives, intranet(s), write and test scripted systems to assist in the deployment and management of desktop configurations and applications as necessary. You will develop and test Cyborg Scripting Language code and form-design for Accero/Cyborg-related needs, e.g., custom reports, additional functionality, etc.; assist in development and support of the EthoTrak observation system; and perform administration and maintenance on databases for the Society's enterprise applications and web sites. Other related duties as assigned including, but not limited to, reporting immediately to the Director of Information Services and the Vice President of Human Resources any discovery of child pornography on any of the Society's electronic or information technology equipment in accordance with Society policy; and, immediately report to the Director of Information Services or the Sr. V.P. of Finance and Administration any activity or request for application or security updates or modifications that may violate current Society Policy, particularly as it relates to electronic communication or confidential information.

Position Requirements and Specifications
As Brookfield Zoo is open 365 days a year, this position highly prefers flexible availability to work any 5 days out of any 7 days each week; this position generally requires flexible availability to work non-standard hours including evenings, holidays, and weekends. This is a temporary (seasonal) position.

The requirements for this position include:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other relevant field or equivalent combination of related training and experience required.

  • One year minimum prior experience with database management systems.

  • Two years minimum prior experience with MS Office required.

  • Two years minimum experience with Web development.

  • Must have one-year minimum specific experience with the.NET family of languages and technologies: C#, VB.NET, and ASP.NET.

  • Must have one year minimum experience with the following technologies and programming skills: Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL; Object Oriented programming concepts; XML; JavaScript; Cascading Style Sheets; DOS batch scripting; and basic networking as it relates to web site and software development.

  • Must have experience with software and programming code documentation, as well as experience with Microsoft Visio in use with software and database design.

  • At least two years general technical/programming experience.

  • Must have good communication skills.

  • Must maintain confidentiality of information and respect client privacy.

  • Must have excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Must be able to work under pressure, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.

  • Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.

  • Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.
