Post-Doctoral Fellow, Animal Welfare Research ? Endocrine Lab

The Post-Doctoral Fellow, Animal Welfare Research - Endocrine Lab is responsible for the development and validation of new enzyme immunoassays for indicators of positive and negative welfare of animals in zoos and aquariums. This includes coordinating all aspects of the validation projects and providing regular feedback as requested. As Post-Doctoral Fellow, Animal Welfare Research - Endocrine Lab, you will also work with the Senior Director of Animal Welfare and Endocrinology Lab Manager to develop protocols for all new assays to ensure consistency and reliability and assist with general lab work as needed. You will prepare reports for scientific publication and presentation and for distribution to collaborators. You will also write grant proposals to secure project funding for future projects and help with program fundraising in general.

Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following.
  • Ph.D. degree in Endocrinology, Animal Science, Animal Physiology or related field is required.
  • Experience developing and validating enzyme immunoassays required.
  • Basic computer literacy required, including skills in database management, statistical packages, and graphing software.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Prior experience in writing reports and scientific papers, grant preparation, and oral presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks as necessary.
  • Prior experience training and supervising staff, preferably including students, volunteers, and/or interns.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

The desirable qualifications include:
  • Experience using noninvasive monitoring for autonomic nervous system activity, immune function, and adrenal activity preferred.
  • Previous experience working at a zoological institution is desirable.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
