Since the opening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an international reputation for taking a cutting-edge role in animal care and conservation of the natural world. From the world's longest-running study of bottlenose dolphins to pioneering the field of conservation psychology, the Society is an active partner in wildlife protection programs around the world. We are also making a difference locally by engaging over 2 million zoo guests annually with unique exhibits and programs.

The Creative Services department is responsible for the narrative, brand, and visual presentation of the Society and Brookfield Zoo. It is mainly through the efforts of this department-which includes signage, advertising and public relations materials, printed materials, content development, and electronic communications-that the Society is able to impart its messages of conservation leadership and animal care and welfare.

The Photo Editor / Photographer contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by coordinating photography services and photographically documenting images for a wide variety of needs throughout the institution, including but not limited to donor visits, animal care, and events to help build awareness about CZS leadership in animal care, education, research and conservation, to support effective communications, extraordinary guest experiences, and contributing indirectly to Society revenues.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the scheduling and fulfillment of photography requests, and takes photographs as part of the Society's photography program.
  • Maintain the Society's digital image collection including the filing, retrieval and processing of requests for use of existing images. Select and provide imagery that supports the Society's brand to fulfill photography requests.
  • Actively participate in donor and VIP cultivation during special tours and fundraising events by art directing and photographing while engaging guests in conversation. Work with staff on the fulfillment of these photo opportunities to maximize cultivation potential.
  • Through the use of photography, document zoo animals, people, activities, and events for Society staff including, but not limited to, animal programs, public relations, communications, veterinary programs, special events, presentations, and interpretation.
  • Work closely with Marketing to shoot social media assignments. Some assignments may shoot with electronic communication devises for immediate upload to social media sites.
  • Maintain equipment so that it remains in good working condition.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

 


Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements include the following:

 

 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Photography or other related field, or eight years of equivalent experience required.
  • Three years photography experience required.
  • One year comparable experience photographing and interacting with high-level VIPs and officials.
  • Ability to assess situations involving photography assignments and discern appropriate opportunities to interact with and engage VIPs and when to defer to other staff to do so.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required.
  • Must possess an even temperament, be self-motivated, flexible, confident, punctual, and enjoy working in a dynamic team environment.
  • Must be diplomatic and tactful; able to deal with all levels of staff, guests, trustees, visiting dignitaries, and donors. Articulate, well-spoken individual, capable of effectively representing the organization professionally to various diverse, multicultural audiences, both within and outside the organization.
  • Must be highly skilled in digital imaging and must produce professional-level, quality photography.
  • Must be self-motivated, punctual and reliable.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop or comparable photo editing software required.
  • A valid driver's license is required on date of hire. If an Illinois resident, must possess a valid Illinois driver's license at the time of hire or must obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver's license is required at time of hire for out-of-state residents.

The preferred qualifications:

 

 

 

  • Working knowledge of Macintosh computers.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

Additional Information: This position requires a savvy professional photographer who works closely with Development/fundraising staff with respect to visits to the zoo from important donors, potential donors, and other high-ranking VIPs and officials. Position requires an effective communicator, who is able to engage such visitors at their level and is able to easily establish rapport. The position also requires a keen ability to discern when it is appropriate to engage VIPs, to take cues from others, and when not to do so/defer to others on the cultivation team. The incumbent works as part of donor cultivation for such visits and, therefore, needs to work synergistically with others on the development/cultivation team. This position requires the incumbent to get into various exhibits with animals, with appropriate precaution for human and animal safety. This is a full-time position, which may occasionally include weekend, holiday, and evening work. Incumbent may assist and inform the public as needed.
