Manager, High School and College Outreach Programs

Opened
in 1934, Brookfield Zoo is managed by the Chicago Zoological Society and is
accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The Chicago
Zoological Society is committed to developing people's capacities and
competencies, serving as a mentor and trainer, providing experiential learning
opportunities to individuals seeking to understand, develop, and establish
careers in the fields of zoology and conservation. In fulfilling this role, the Society has a
long-standing Internship Program that has been recognized as one of the top
programs for college students in the country. The program, established in 1975,
was one of the first in the nation to allow students pursuing careers in animal
care the opportunity to work side by side with professional zookeepers,
learning the skills and techniques necessary to manage exotic zoo animals.
Since that time, the Internship Program, now called the College Experiential
Learning Opportunities (C.E.L.O.) program, has evolved to include internships
and research opportunities in a variety of areas and fields.

The
Manager, High School and College Outreach Programs is responsible for the
integration of programs for teens and college students in accordance with the
Strategic Plan by identifying and collaborating internally with various
departments and externally with community partners and schools-both secondary
and college level to ensure diverse and inclusive participation. By
implementing teen and college outreach programs to educate and inspire
individuals to take positive action on behalf of the natural world and/or to
pursue careers in the zoological or conservation fields supports the Chicago
Zoological Society mission and vision.

This
position is responsible for managing a portfolio of high school and college
outreach programs, efforts and initiatives that represents CZS favorably and
promote good will and foster strong, sustainable relationships within various
communities. You will lead efforts
including responsibility and accountability for key programmatic decisions,
outcomes, evaluation, budget, grants, scheduling and staffing for current suite
of programs and any new initiatives including King Conservation Scholars and
College Experiential Learning Opportunities; programs must be in alignment with
the CZS learning strategy, and institutional goals. Utilizing your genuine interest and passion
for nature and animals, you will develop recruitment strategies and materials
to promote programs externally. As
Manager, High School and College Outreach Programs, you will proactively work
with other departments to identify opportunities for high school and college
students; work with existing and cultivate new external partners to extend
outreach network to ensure diverse and inclusive program participants; and,
lead an external advisory group that informs program recruitment, promotion and
structure. Making use of your proven
track record of creating innovative programs to engage underserved audiences in
conservation, through these programs, you will expand and enhance the Society's
impact and relevance within target communities.
As Manager, you will develop an annual budget and prepare accurate
monthly reforecasts; assist with fundraising efforts for programs including
cultivation, proposal drafts, presentations, grant administration and reports;
and, select, train, supervise, schedule and evaluates, full-time and part-time
staff, volunteers and interns who assist in program development, delivery and
logistics throughout the Chicagoland area.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The
requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor's
    degree in education, interpretation, biology or other related field, or
    equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Minimum
    two years of supervisory or management experience or equivalent combination of
    education and experience.
  • Minimum
    of five years of experience in coordination, developing and delivering informal
    education programs in an urban setting.
  • Knowledge
    of general education principles and practices.
    Knowledge of current trends in service learning and work-study.
  • Excellent
    organization, communication and customer service skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent
    written, verbal and listening skills. Ability
    to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Society staff,
    volunteers and the general public; ability to work as a member of a team as
    well as independently.
  • Experience
    and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural
    audience.
  • Proficient
    in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid
    Illinois license within 90 days of hire.
    Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.
  • Ability
    to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.


The
desirable/preferred qualifications include experience with urban teens, prior
budget/reforecasting experience, experience with reasonable accommodations
under the American's with Disabilities Act, and multilingual ability, Spanish
fluency, is a plus.
