Interpretive Programs Coordinator

As part of the Chicago Zoological Society's mission, we work each day to ensure that the conservation movement reaches out to and hears from every person and community at every income level and ability. Our beautiful park like setting has an amazing 216 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, the Discovery Center and Pavilions provide indoor and outdoor event facilities, three major restaurants provide delicious food options, and there are over 20 different animal exhibits.

The Interpretive Programs Coordinator is responsible for the directing and conducting of public presentations, including live animal demonstrations, throughout the zoo and serving as a resource for public demonstrations and other activities requiring public interaction.

This includes being responsible for the delivery of consistent and quality interpretation by self and others and being responsible for developing and implementing live animal demonstrations and programs by working closely with the Animal Programs staff. Under the direction of the Interpretive Program Supervisor, you will coordinate the implementation of interpretive programs which includes assisting in recruiting, hiring, training and supervising seasonal staff. You will be responsible for monitoring interpretation park-wide for quality and consistency of programs; making specific recommendations to the Interpretive Programs Manager and Supervisor for changes and improvements; and serve as staff resource for public presentations, voice-overs, special events and other programs as requested.

Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following:



  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Biology or related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required.


  • Minimum of one year relevant experience with public speaking, education programs or show narration required. Exceptional public speaking, communications, and interpersonal skills required. Must be comfortable speaking to large audiences.


  • Must have ability to master scripts, and effectively respond to any situation during the course of a presentation(s).


  • Must be able to work independently, and interact in a courteous and professional manner.


  • Must be comfortable handling a variety of live animals safely.


  • Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.


  • This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position with rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.

The preferred qualifications include:



  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise others preferred.


  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
