Food Service Associate

Food Service Associates are assigned to work in restaurants, refreshment stands, mobile carts, or other outdoor sales locations at Brookfield Zoo.

As a Food Service Associate, you are responsible for preparing food, taking inventory, handling cash, and maintaining a safe, clean work environment within a food sales location in compliance with Health Department regulations to assure guests have a quality and enjoyable experience, thus contributing to the Society's goals of generating revenue and providing an extraordinary guest experience. Works to accommodate the needs of customers and ensures the quality of products and high service levels for all customers.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the position include:
  • Accurately and efficiently operate a cash register while projecting a positive and engaging attitude towards guests. Count and balance cash drawer at the end of each work day.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and safe environment for guests by bussing and wiping tables, cleaning counter tops, sweeping, mopping up spills, emptying trash and recycling containers, and following standard safety and sanitation practices.
  • Prepare and serve food products following procedures and sanitation rules in compliance with Health Department regulations while adhering to product rotations.
  • Safely operate and clean food service equipment using proper personal protective equipment. Equipment includes, but not limited to: flat top grills, barbeque grills, deep fryers, pizza ovens, conventional ovens, ice cream machines, soda machines, and food vending carts.
  • Following established procedures, wash, rinse, and sanitize dishes, trays, utensils and equipment. Wash windows, garbage and recycling receptacles, and properly dispose of trash and recyclables.
  • Maintain security of all assigned Society equipment, assets, supplies and general information. Strictly follow all food service cash handling procedures. Provide assistance in completion of inventory as directed.
  • Provide professional and friendly assistance and directions to guests and co-workers.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following:


  • Basic math skills and willingness to learn required.

  • Demonstrated strong customer service and interpersonal skills required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff required.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks required.

  • Must project a neat, clean, professional appearance at all times.

  • Must be able to work effectively and accurately and at a brisk pace during busy periods.

  • Must complete food handler certification and other required training within 30 days of hire.

  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

The desirable qualifications include:


  • High School graduate or (GED) equivalent preferred.

  • Basic computer skills a plus.

  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

Incumbent must learn and follow applicable Society policies and departmental procedures and standards. Food Service Associates are assigned to work in restaurants, refreshment stands, mobile carts, or other outdoor sales locations (certain positions have minimum age requirements.) Food Service employees may also be required to assist temporarily at other locations as needed. Incumbent must work non-standard hours including evenings, holidays, and weekends. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation and may be adjusted due to weather conditions or for other reasons.
