Dispatcher EMT (Seasonal)

Whether you are gazing upon the iconic North American animals at Great Bear Wilderness, jumping into the jungle at Tropic World to meet our new silverback gorilla, or taking in a super spectacular dolphin show at the Dolphinarium, Brookfield Zoo has been a remarkable destination since 1934. With 216 acres of park-like setting, our guests may visit to enjoy seeing and learning about our over 450 species of animals or attend a special event such as a wedding, picnic or meeting.

The Dispatcher EMT (Seasonal) contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by responding to calls from employees and guests for emergency and routine assistance assuring a positive, safe and extraordinary guest experience under direction of the Police Operations Lieutenant or, in his/her absence, the Sergeant on duty.

The primary duties and responsibilities:
  • Operates the Public Safety communication center. Promptly answers calls to the station and dispatches Police units accordingly. Maintains incidents cards for responding units.
  • Provides emergency medical assistance to guests and staff and performs ambulance duty as required. Medical assistance includes, but is not limited to patient transports, extrication, loading and unloading patient onto stretcher and in/out of the ambulance, and CPR/AED to basic lifesaving under the guidelines set by Loyola University Medical Center. Completes required internal and state reports.
  • Contacts and coordinates communications with municipal agencies during emergencies and non-emergencies as necessary.
  • Maintains the Society's Lost and Found service for guests and staff.
  • Monitors the weather and fire alarm systems and notifies managers of identified issues.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following:
  • Some college related to Public Safety, such as Criminal Justice, Fire Science, or Emergency Medical training or equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Valid Emergency Medical Technician certification required; must remain current in Emergency Medical Services continuing education as mandated per licensing requirements.
  • Must be able to handle emergency situations calmly and be able to work effectively at all levels of emergency response.
  • Must be flexible and able to respond and adapt to changes and shifting priorities.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Eye for accuracy, completeness, and detail. Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Must be self-motivated, possess strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • A valid driver's license is required on date of hire. If you are an Illinois resident, you must possess a valid Illinois driver's license at the time of hire or must obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver's license is required at time of hire if the employee is an out-of-state resident.

The preferred qualifications:
  • Minimum one year experience preferred in police/EMS dispatching and working with the public.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

Additional Information: This is a temporary position working approximately 20 hours per week based on the needs of the operation. Position requires rotating days off, varied starting times, working weekends and holidays and other schedule changes due to special events or operating needs. Must gain a strong working understanding of department operations and procedures, along with an understanding of the Society's mission, vision, values and operating philosophies and how work activities impact the operation of the zoo and other departments.
