Craftsman, Creative Services (Seasonal)

Since Brookfield Zoo opened its doors to the public in 1934, the Chicago Zoological Society has had a legacy of educating the public about animal care and conservation of the natural world. The Society inspires and engages children, students, teachers, and others among the general public to make a positive impact on the natural world around them. As guests stroll through our 216 acres visiting over 20 different animal exhibits, the exhibit signage and other exhibit elements assist in engaging our guests in learning about the animals at Brookfield Zoo and inspiring conservation leadership.

The Seasonal Craftsman in Creative Services sign shop helps to educate our guests and provide an extraordinary guest experience through the maintenance of signs and other exhibit elements and performing other Creative Services shop responsibilities and projects that support the Society's mission and vision.

The Seasonal Craftsman's responsibilities in Creative Services include performing routine tasks with direct guidance and semi-skilled/unskilled duties throughout the park such as:



  • General shop cleaning/maintenance

  • Cleaning of exhibit signage associated with preventive maintenance

  • Inventory

  • Special events install/take-down

  • Responding to emergency and safety requests

  • Unanticipated special repairs and capital projects

This position also includes assisting Creative Services shop staff in performing their work such as, but not limited to, inspections and routine repair of signage, interactive devices, and special event decorations and performing routine deliveries of signage, decorations, or other department materials using a flatbed cart or vehicle throughout the park. Responsibilities also include assisting in routine inspections of functional, structural, and aesthetic systems throughout the park; providing supervisor with needed repair and improvement information; performing all work to meet Creative Services' shop quality control standards; and compliance with all standard operating procedures.

Position Requirements and Specifications
This position requires the ability to work an eight-hour day in all weather conditions. The starting time, scheduled work days, and weekly total hours will be determined by the VP of Visual Communications and Environmental Design in collaboration with sign shop supervisor. This is a temporary (seasonal) position. The union hourly wage for this position is $10.15 per hour.

The requirements for this position include:



  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must be able to read, write, and perform all required math commensurate with field of responsibility.

  • Must possess skills related to basic carpentry and painting in order to be able to assist in performing routine repairs and preventative maintenance of signage and interactive devices throughout the zoo.

  • Experience with hand and power tool operation required.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to work well with minimal supervision required.

  • Good communications and interpersonal skills required.

  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

  • Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.

  • One or more of the following licenses may be required: Valid "C" or "B" (CDL) Driver's License.

  • Valid medical authorization card required for positions responsible for operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle driving responsibilities.

The desirable/preferred qualifications include:



  • High School graduate or (GED) equivalent preferred.

  • Minimum one year general construction experience preferred.

  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
