Coordinator, Conservation Science Scholars

Opened
in 1934, Brookfield Zoo is managed by the Chicago Zoological Society and is
accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The Chicago
Zoological Society is committed to developing people's capacities and
competencies, serving as a mentor and trainer, providing experiential learning
opportunities to individuals seeking to understand, develop, and establish
careers in the fields of zoology and conservation. In fulfilling this role, the Society has a
long-standing Internship Program that has been recognized as one of the top
programs for college students in the country. The program, established in 1975,
was one of the first in the nation to allow students pursuing careers in animal
care the opportunity to work side by side with professional zookeepers,
learning the skills and techniques necessary to manage exotic zoo animals.
Since that time, the Internship Program, now called the College Experiential
Learning Opportunities (C.E.L.O.) program, has evolved to include internships
and research opportunities in a variety of areas and fields.

The
primary goal for the Coordinator, Conservation Science Scholars is to build
strong, sustainable relationships with a diverse spectrum of teens, their
parents and community stakeholders throughout the Chicagoland area. The Coordinator, Conservation Science
Scholars works with the Manager High School and College Outreach Programs, Vice
President Institutional Planning and Inclusion, and other staff to identify,
develop, engage, and maintain relationships and networks to ensure diverse
participation in the Conservation Science Scholars programs related to a
strategic community outreach program within the Chicagoland area. This includes working with key elected officials,
businesses, and civic and community leaders, among others. Specifically, the Coordinator Conservation
Science Scholars will recruit and train staff to lead workshops for
participants of the Conservation Science Scholars program toward its goals,
outcomes and objectives. This includes training/workshop development and
delivery both on Zoo grounds and off site. You will supervise program
participants during field trips, for off-site projects, and for off-site or
on-site volunteer days; schedule Conservation Science Scholars participants for
both on-site and off-site activities; and, assist with fundraising for outreach
efforts, including cultivation, grant writing and reporting/presentations.

Bachelor's
degree in Communications, Education, Biology, and Liberal Arts or other
relevant field or equivalent combination of related training and experience
required.

Minimum
of two years progressive, relevant experience working with teens in an outreach
program.

Strong
interpersonal and communication skills, verbal, written, and listening skills. Excellent public speaking and presentation
skills.

range of constituencies and diverse communities. Experience and/or ability to work and

in identifying and organizing resources, establishing priorities and meeting
critical deadlines. Must be able to handle
multiple projects simultaneously and work within a fast-paced environment with

Chicagoland area.

Multilingual

Additional
information: The individual will be
expected to be present and visible at designated events sponsored by the
Society in the community, for its employees, and other professional
participants and other audiences as requested.
Thus, individual must be prepared to make a significant commitment to
the organization. Regular weekend or
evening event work is required along with local travel around the Chicagoland
area. Some other travel may be required. Incumbent is expected to represent the
organization professionally at all times.
