Chicagoland Environmental Network Coordinator

Since the opening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an international reputation for taking a cutting-edge role in animal care and conservation of the natural world. The Society is an active partner in wildlife protection programs around the world, including the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, the world's longest-running study of bottlenose dolphins. We have pioneered the field of conservation psychology, the study of how people connect with animals and nature. The Chicagoland Environmental Network (CEN) Coordinator (Seasonal) is responsible for linking individuals and families with opportunities to participate in local environmental and conservation efforts in support of the Society's mission. The CEN Coordinator will manage relationships with CEN member organizations; train member organizations on the use of CEN's online tools; identify appropriate organizations to add to the membership; consider (approve or deny) all non-solicited applications for membership; and review all current members and removes those that are inactive or disbanded. The CEN Coordinator will manage CEN website content; approve submissions to the website from members and non-member; determine appropriateness of posting on behalf of non-members; identify volunteer opportunities, job/internships, and environmental events for posting on the website; and perform daily management of member information and postings to assure contact information and all opportunities are accurate and current. The coordinator will also manage information requests including responding to requests from the public, CEN members, and society staff, and direct reporters and environmental researchers to the appropriate CEN members. The coordinator will manage technical vendors including vendors responsible for enhancing and maintaining the database. The coordinator will periodically evaluate the database, identify enhancement needs, and work with the technical vendors to build those enhancements as well as keep aware of new web-based tools that would make the site easier to maintain and use. Furthermore, the coordinator will manage CEN office administrative duties such as assisting with invoicing and payment process; reporting to grant funding organizations as needed; collecting CEN mail and answering inquiries. The CEN Coordinator will keep Senior Manager, Audience Research informed on all CEN matters.

Position Requirements and Specifications
As Brookfield Zoo is open 365 days a year, this position highly prefers flexible availability to work any 5 days out of any 7 days each week; this position generally requires flexible availability to work non-standard hours including evenings, holidays, and weekends. This is a temporary (seasonal) position.

The requirements for this position include:


  • BA in the natural or social sciences with a minimum of 3 years experience with regional issues, local environmental groups or Chicago Wilderness.
  • Ability to manage a website and database containing over 200 organizations.
  • Ability to maintain a conservation hotline for both urgent and routine situations and resolve by networking with appropriate scientists.
  • High-level writing and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate professionally with CEOs, other organizations and staff.
  • Ability to work independently with high accountability for actions.
  • Excellent work process and database management skills. Attention to detail is a must.
  • Critical thinking skills to determine appropriate web site content.
  • Ability to work effectively with outside vendors.
  • Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.
  • Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.
