Banquet Captain, Catered Events

This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by managing the operational aspects of all Catered Events and ensuring an extraordinary guest experience, contributing to the Society's goal of financial sustainability. Oversees banquet and scheduled events staff, execution under Catered Events as well as manages all logistics, including site arrangements. Ensures all set up, details, staffing levels and execution meet or exceed CZS standards and to ensure financial goals are met. Oversee that proper care is taken in respect to all China, glass, silver, set up props, linen, and any other additional support items.
Responsibilities: Responsible for operational phase of all events operation including management, staffing, and planning. Work closely with management and staff throughout entire staffing selection process. Manage Banquet Staff including Seasonal Captains and other assigned staff who are responsible for start-to-finish coordination of all details, logistics, entertainment, catering, site arrangements, etc., to ensure overall success of their respective operation. Manage assigned staff, including but not limited to, selection, job assignments, training and development, counseling, appraisal and recognition actions to assure success in functional area of expertise and proficiency at coordinating flawless events. Oversee financial aspects of operations includes staffing and beverage costs. Oversee all scheduled events. Meet with Banquet staff prior to events to ensure all details are arranged. Review BEO's with Banquet Staff and Chef to coordinate projects and ensure success. Plan, direct, control, and evaluate departmental activities. Maintain operational coordination standards with other departments. Maintain good working relationships with all CZS departments. Establish and reinforce first-class service procedures, set-up procedures, and departmental operating standard procedures. Work closely with Catered Events Sales Managers to maximize efficient and cost-effective use of space. Keep management informed of all emergent issues within the Catered Events Department. Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements: Associate's degree in Business Administration, HRM or related field, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required. Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in hotel, banquet, or special events management required. Two years supervisory experience required. Strong customer service skills required. Basic computer skills required. Must possess demonstrated strong communication, coaching and interpersonal skills. Must possess strong organizational skills. Demonstrated experience successfully coordinating multiple projects and activities. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and juggle multiple priorities. Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience. Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus. Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. This position requires weekend, holiday, and evening work.
