General Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of the Advancing Careers and Employment (ACE) Program the Basic Skills/ HSET Instructional Training Facilitator will provide basic skills, cognitive behavioral interventions, leadership and entrepreneurship training, and financial coaching for The DOL Intermediary Grant Program – Advancing Careers and Employment (ACE) which is designed to help justice-involved adults ages 25 and older to embark on career pathways and advance as they acquire industry recognized skills and credentials in in-demand sectors and occupations. The Facilitator also facilitates clients through their credential training to position them for employment in in-demand industries.

The Basic Skills/HSET Instructional Training Facilitator provides a unique opportunity to employ academic training and peer-teaching to our program participants in an unstructured and non-traditional learning environment.  This training is holistic in its integration of the practical aspects of academic tasks with interpersonal skills relevant to the work place.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Based on the individual students’ varying needs, abilities and interest, adapt traditional and non-traditional teaching methods to provide instruction and support in the Basic Skills required to pass the High School Equivalency Test (HSET).
  • Observe and evaluate students’ work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using current and life events as subject matters for discussion and problem solving,
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities for cognitive behavioral interventions, leadership and entrepreneurship training, and financial coaching.
  • Keep abreast with changes in the marketplace and Safer’s employment process in order to continually update and enhance curriculum, presentations and materials that reflect the current real world of work. 
  • Assist clients in the development of a suitable resume, how to engage in a successful interview. Provide individual coaching/mentoring as needed.
  • Participate in regular staffings to be certain that all vital information is exchanged, and, subsequently, used in the development, review and revision of participant’s progress plans

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of and experience teaching a variety of student-centered approaches in a range of subjects.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the particular learning needs and employment barriers faced by people with criminal records
  • Good computer skills and experience with databases and tracking systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; excellent interpersonal skills
  • A valid driver’s license is required
  • Access to a (reliable) automobile is required for travel as necessary to carry out responsibilities

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (education, counseling, psychology, criminal justice)
  • 2 years’ successful experience teaching Basic Skills/HSET to youth and/or adults including leading groups using cognitive behavioral intervention and coaching in financial literacy, leadership, and entrepreneurial efforts
  • Experience with start-ups and multiple-site operations

 

 

 

All positions are Full-Time (40-hours/week) and located in the Chicago Metropolitan area, unless otherwise specified.
