SUMMARY

The Lead Staff Nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) who practices within the scope of the Illinois Nurse P r actice Act to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, high quality, individualized nursing care, based upon knowledge and experience, the nursing process and leadership skills. Assists leadership in ensuring that all clinical staff is guided appropriately in their daily activities to provide efficient care to patients, accurately code, and accurately support education, quality improvement and auditing initiatives. Delegates tasks to competent and appropriate caregivers.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs duties of a registered nurse as required to maintain quality, timely patient care and maintains nursing skills. Assists the physician in performing procedures by preparing the required instruments and equipment. Assists in explaining the procedures to the patient.


  • Oversees the general patient flow including scheduling of required clinical staff to provide timely care for all patients and to safeguard the health and wellbeing of those with acute injuries/illness. Maintains responsibility for nursing triage, directs and monitors triage flow process.


  • Collaborates with leadership to direct, supervise and assist clinical departmental personnel in the operations of the department.


  • Provides and educates the patient with written and verbal discharge instructions. Documents teaching and instructions provided. Ensures that the plan of follow up care is communicated to the patient, employer and insurer when needed.


  • Initiates referrals and/or collaborates with appropriate resource personnel to ensure efficient referral and front desk flow functions and facilitates the delivery of patient care.


  • Collates reviews and documents test results on the appropriate forms: relays information to the physician. Communicates required test results to employers, patients or family and documents accordingly.


  • Collaborates with appropriate personnel to ensure that all billable charges are entered into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system on a timely basis.


  • Maintains responsibility for developing and maintaining departmental objectives, policies and procedures to ensure excellent patient care and efficient operations. Is compliant with patient satisfaction, accreditation standards and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) standards and actively participates in meeting these standards.


  • Implements and monitors various quality initiatives e.g. Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) measures, Clinical Integration/ICLOPS, Meaningful Use, Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) studies, etc.


  • Utilizes professional problem solving techniques to handle problems with staffing or patient care. Acts as a resource to staff members. Identifies problems and concerns, proposes possible solutions and successfully adapts to change. Works collaboratively with the management to implement processes for compliance.


  • Maintains responsibility for controlling and reporting medical errors in the appropriate system.


  • Assists with inventory control by ordering, maintaining and monitoring inventory for all clinical supplies; incorporates fiscal responsibility through the provisions of efficient and cost-effective care.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    Graduate of an accredited Nursing program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing with one year of experience or Associate's degree in Nursing with three years of experience required. One year of supervisory experience

    Computer Skills

    Experience with Microsoft Office applications, Outlook, and EMR applications preferred.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Current Illinois RN license and BLS certification. Certification in area of specialty if required
