SUMMARY

Responsible for assisting laboratory staff in routine tests used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Laboratory Phlebotomist collects and processes clinical blood and non-blood specimens, dispenses collection instructions to patients, maintains work area, and utilizes computer systems for data storage and retrieval.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist in receiving, logging and collecting specimens. Prepare specimens for on-site and reference lab testing.

2. Assist with identification and labeling of specimens, storage and distribute specimens, providing office staff and patients with detailed instructions on specimen handling.

3. Perform laboratory testing as directed by technical staff.

4. File reports and laboratory results.

5. Operate, clean and maintain laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments. Clean work area as needed. Perform routine maintenance and quality controls according to manufacturer's directions along with JOHAs policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma/GED and some college science courses preferred.

Minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience.

Preferably/but not required, experience performing routine laboratory tests.

Medical Terminology.

Knowledge

Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine laboratory tests and personal protection equipment (PPE).

Knowledge of phlebotomy blood drawing and proper technique.

Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean/sterilize, and perform maintenance along with quality controls.

Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate laboratory staff.

Knowledge of JOHAs Quality Expectations and ability to utilize them in the clinic environment.

Knowledge of Medicare/insurance directives, ICD-9 codes and CPT codes for billing purposes of laboratory procedures.

Skills

Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation.

Skill in phlebotomy blood drawing and proper technique.

Skill in preparing accurate reports concerning the results of laboratory results.

Skill in communicating clearly with a diverse population.

Abilities

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.

Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions and follow written protocols.

Ability to work independently and multitask.

Requires ASCP or equivalent certification in phlebotomy.
