SUMMARY

The Student Nurse Assistant (SNA), under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), works, learns, and begins the process of socialization into the nursing profession while observing or assisting the RN with patient assessment and management in a variety of settings.

The SNA, under the direction and supervision of the RN, performs various duties to assist the nursing staff in meeting patient treatment and care requirements. This position practices nursing skills in a simulated environment. All duties are carried out in accordance with the established policies and procedures.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Demonstrates the use of caring behaviors, focusing on individual's needs, maintaining patient dignity and cultural sensitivity.
  • Promotes and maintains an atmosphere for patient comfort. Keeps patient room clean and orderly.
  • Assists the nurse in providing and documenting basic physical care consistent with the patient and family's age-specific needs.
  • Assists the RN in patient care activities within the capacity, training, and experience in the SNA role.
  • Successfully performs selected patient procedures appropriate to the role (e.g. blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, heights, weights, intake and output, and the collection of urine, stool, and sputum specimens) in an accurate and precise manner. Asks for directions and supervision in care situations, as appropriate.
  • Maintains awareness of and reports changes in patients' physical and/or mental condition in a timely manner.
  • Uses patient related materials and supplies appropriately and economically. Replenishes patient supplies as needed.
  • Performs in an accurate and precise manner in emergency situations.
  • Assists with admissions, transfers, patient activity, morgue transport, and discharge of patients.
  • Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care processes, adapting appropriately to changes in workload and patient assignment.
  • Demonstrates ability to carry out assignments within given time period. Documents appropriately in the patient record those elements of care provided by the SNA.
  • Recognizes and communicates patient/family educational needs to the RN.

    Education and/or Experience

    Enrolled in an accredited nursing program or at least one year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) required.

    Computer Skills

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    CPR or BLS certification required within first week of employment.
