SUMMARY

The Supervisor, Sterile Processing supervises designated SPD shift on all parameters of decontaminating, sterilizing and reprocessing instruments and equipment throughout the Medical Center and its affiliated Family Care Centers. Provides support and focus on the instrumentation needs of the Surgical Case Cart System. Coordinates and oversees the work activities associated with managing supply and equipment inventory, distribution of medical and surgical supplies throughout patient care areas. Performs all duties associated with surgical case cart processes in preparation for surgical procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Facilitates and provides assistance to SPD Techs in the clarification and completion of duties. Prepares daily work schedules and establish priorities to ensure smooth flow of operations for SPD and customers. Coordinates and assists service line tech in carrying out duties working with the OR specialty nurses.
  • Oversees SPD staff in the processing of instruments and equipment according to established department procedures and guidelines. Guides staff in and/or participate in assembling surgical case carts with emphasis on the importance of the Surgical Case Cart Program. Inventories specialty carts; wrap, seal and label articles for identification, sterilization and distribution; clean, assemble and sanitize instruments and equipment; and transport clean items and equipment to all departments.
  • Coordinates the operations within Central Supply by generating daily supply and medication orders to meet the needs of the department; maintaining daily logs and records of quality control tests and inventory; and compiling data to assist manager in the preparation of bi-annual quality improvement and other department reports.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to Supply Assistants in the clarification and completion of duties and with development issues. Prepares daily work schedules and monitor and re-establish work assignments based on volume demands. Participates in the orientation, in-servicing, and training of staff. Provides feedback to manager regarding the performance of staff.
  • Receives, sorts, and stocks medical supplies. Provides information regarding medical/surgical supplies and equipment distributed by Central Supply to departmental staff and appropriate individuals in the Medical Center and its affiliated Family Care Centers.
  • Monitors sterilizer to ensure proper functioning and processing and log data pertaining to the biological and chemical indicators. Identifies and reports equipment malfunctions and/or problems to the manager. Ensures the prevention and control of cross contamination and infections.
  • Maintains the inventory of medical supplies to ensure stock is available to meet the needs of the department. Monitors expiration dates and rotate stock, removing outdated items for proper disposition.
  • Completes daily inventory, reconciliation, and re-stocking of PAR levels. Monitors and re-stocks the Pyxis stations dedicated to the Emergency Department.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience
    Associate's degree in general education, pre-nursing, healthcare or related field required. Minimum three years of extensive Central Service experience; or Surgical Tech with one year perioperative experience required.

    Computer Skills
    Computer order processing knowledge required.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
    Certified Registered, Central Service Technician certification (CRCST) or Certified Surgical Tech/Licensed Practical Nurse with SPD experience required.
