SUMMARY
The Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) assists in providing quality care through the use of epidemiology standards and principles to reduce the risk of infection throughout the facility. The ICP is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, and reporting and staff education in regards healthcare acquired infections. Identifies, investigates and records data concerning hospital acquired infections. Initiates infection control measures as directed by the infection control committee. The ICP promotes optimal health care outcomes in accordance with the policies, procedures, philosophy, objectives, and the mission of Presence Health.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Surveys the hospital environment for the purpose of identifying potential infectiou s hazards.
- Works with hospital departments to assess compliance with infection control policies and procedures.
- Is a member of the construction team focusing on compliance with infection control standards and policies during all phases of construction.
- Reviews microbiology reports, medical records, integrates clinical findings, and other diagnostic tests to determine the presence of hospital acquired infections, and epidemiologically significant organisms according to the criteria established by the Center for Disease Control and Epidemiology. Trends and clusters are reported to the Infection Control Committee.
- Works with the Infection Control Committee chairman, to identify and evaluate unusual outbreaks of infection utilizing microbiology data and consults state and local public health departments as needed. Conducts epidemiological investigations/special studies as identified and necessary. Collaborates with the Infection Control Committee to make infection prevention recommendations. Monitors patient billing system. Enters patient computer information accurately and promptly.
- The presentation of formal and informal Infection Prevention and Control education
- Providing assistance in the development and review of infection prevention and control guidelines and/or policies and procedures.
- Participating on hospital committees and performance improvement teams.
- Acts as a liaison to Employee Health to identify all significant exposures; collects information, analyzes data for trends. Collaborates with Employee Health in identification of opportunities for improvement.
- Reports to the Public Health Department(s) on identified communicable diseases. Secures and maintains the reports protecting the privacy of the patient information.
- Prepares and analyzes Infection Control data for the Infection Control Committee.
- Demonstrates current knowledge of external regulatory agencies infection control and prevention standards/regulations.
- Serves as a resource to the staff and the organization.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in nursing or bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science required
Three years of nursing or medical technologist with microbiology experience in a hospital setting preferred. Knowledge of Infection Control experience preferred.
Computer Skills
Basic with knowledge of Epic and Midas.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
. Registered Nurse with current Illinois licensure, or Medical Technologist (ASCP/BOC) certified required. Infection Control certification preferred.
