SUMMARY

The Polysomnographic Technologist performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis, and associated interventions under general supervision.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Gathers, analyzes and verifies all patient Information through review of patient history, physical information, medication review, procedure request and study protocol. Provides the patient with an orientation to the sleep center and the procedure to be performed.
  • Prepares and calibrates the equipment and make any adjustments necessary. Applies electrodes and sensors to the patient following protocol and standards. Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary. Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
  • Follows procedural protocols (such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data. Follows "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.). Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and makes adjustments.
  • Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Studies polysomnogram to recognize arrhythmias and abnormal respiratory patterns and calls physician or other emergency personnel if needed. Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
  • Follows "lights on" procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.) Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages and clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) by applying professionally accepted and Center specific guidelines. Assists with the generation of accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Performs routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.

    Education and/or Experience
    High school diploma or GED with a minimum of six months' experience as a Polysomnographic Trainee with documented proficiency in all required competencies; one years' experience in Polysomnography or Respiratory with documented proficiency in required competencies preferred.

    Successful completion of an accredited Polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility preferred.

    Computer Skills
    Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
    Registered with (or Registry eligible) by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists or equivalent is preferred. Must maintain compliance with the American Society of Sleep Medicine's (AASM) continuing education credits. Current CPR or BCLS certification is required; ACLS Certification preferred.
