SUMMARY

Observes cardiac monitors to identify abnormal heart rhythms under the supervision of a professional nurse.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.

• Continually observes cardiac monitors and reports any significant or life threatening changes in the cardiac rhythm to nursing personnel.

• Obtains and analyzes an initial rhythm strip on all admissions and on each patient at the beginning of shift.

• Mounts strip on designated form documenting the rate, rhythm, PR interval, and QRS interval accurately and timely per established procedure.

• Follows emergency procedures per established procedure.

• Enters data into telemetry monitoring system accurately and timely. Maintain alarm limits according to established practice standard.

• Immediate review of all alarms and validated.

• Ensures proper lead placement, signal quality and appropriateness of alarm limits.

• Maintains record of telemetry monitor location.

• Retains name of patient in telemetry system until telemetry monitor is returned to the surveillance center.

• Tracks patient's admission and discharge from telemetry.

• Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides routine information to callers

• Maintains adequate supplies according to established par level.

• Reports mechanical difficulty with cardiac monitoring equipment to bio-med and Clinical Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.

Other Functions and Responsibilities:

• Continuously updates knowledge and skills.

• Completes mandatory education on an annual basis.

• Contributes to the training and development of new staff in surveillance functions.

• Participates in a minimum of eight unit/department meetings annually.

• Actively identifies areas of opportunity in own knowledge and skills, taking an active role in obtaining education and training to meet personal goals.

• Maintains continuing education requirements and records as necessary for the position.

• Provides self-improvement opportunities to enhance current practice and customer service.

• Establishes and maintains open relationships with all members of the health care team and demonstrates appropriate communication skills.

• Maintains and follows established department policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement initiatives, safety, environmental and infectious control standards•

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma required. Experience, training, and/or education in cardiac rhythm interpretation preferred. Prefer experience in healthcare as a C.N.A or equivalent.

Must Complete and pass Telemetry Monitoring Course. Continuing competency required.

Computer Skills

Basic computer skills required.
