SUMMARY
The Infection Preventionist is educated in health care and hospital epidemiology principles and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, and reporting and staff education with regards to illness from infection, healthcare acquired infection, infection prevention, state and federal laws and regulatory standards. Provide guidance to facility (hospital, continuum and ambulatory) by active collaboration with leaders, direction to staff, and consultation with providers to promote evidence based practice and quality care. The Infection Preventionist oversees infection prevention and control activities through planning, risk assessment and review and presentation of data in a manner that aligns with the mission, vision and values of Presence Health.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Investigate, evaluate, interpret, and report hospital acquired and healthcare associated infection surveillance data using CDC/NHSN definitions and rates. This includes reviews of lab and microbiology reports, and supporting information, preparing reports for presentation, communicating findings and validating information when circumstances require.
Responsible for reporting communicable diseases to local health departments or state agencies and submitting required regulatory data according to government/agency guidelines.
Conduct investigation of emergent or unusual cluster, infection outbreak or pathogen threat and consult with local and state health departments in collaboration with ministry or facility infectious disease physician or CMO, employee health, and when necessary the Center for Disease Control.
Initiate performance improvement activities which may include action plans in response to surveillance or regulatory finding, lead multidisciplinary task force or team in addressing facility issues and direct education that supports activity goals.
Provide expertise to all departments/committees specific to infection prevention, including responsibility for facility Infection and Prevention Control Plan and Goals, participation in Emergency Preparedness, Environment of Care, staff orientation and annual education requirements, policy review and updates as well as shares Infection Prevention and Control coverage/activities across the region.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience
Registered Nurse with current Illinois licensure or Certified Medical Technologist (MT obtained from an accredited medical technologist program).
Bachelors plus 2 years clinical experience or Graduate of an accredited nursing school plus 4 years clinical experience, including at least 2 years as an Infection Control Practitioner
Education or training in epidemiology or infection control standards acquired through degree program or comparable continuing education preferred.
Knowledge of Infection Criteria as defined by the National Healthcare Safety Network.
Certification in Infection Control, Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. Certification is current or the expectation is to pass the exam within 2- 3 years of employment in the role.
Requires ability to read and interpret medical records, laboratory and microbiology reports, ability to prepare and present educational programs or information to leaders, health care workers and employees at various levels, prior experience or knowledge in data collection, review and analysis, substantial interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively on all levels of the organization.
For the Certified Medical Technologist, in addition to the education and experience as stated above;
2+ years of experience as a data analyst in related field.
2+ years of experience in microbiology.
Computer Skills
Requires knowledge of Microsoft Office software, Meditech or EPIC, and Midas software.
Requires the ability to easily adapt to new programs and technology.

Current Illinois RN license or Certificate Medical Technology MT
Certification in Infection Control as noted above
