The Dietitian's Assistant performs activities relative to patient menu selection and correction based on the need to comply with medically prescribed diets. Maintains communication with the dietitians regarding patient concerns. Responsible for all tasks related to patient menu processing and the coordination of menus and meals served to patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists patient in the selection of menu items in consideration of diet orders, food preferences, age, allergies, culture and religious background. Understands medical terminology as written on printouts used in patient menu correction. Review patient menu selections to ensure nutritional accuracy according to physician medically prescribed diet. Maintains knowledge of all diets and corrects patient menus to diet as ordered.

Processes diet changes, room transfers and discharges received from the computer system and telephone throughout the patient stay according to department procedures. Records and updates diet orders, tube feedings, nourishments and special requests manually or in the computer. Prints diet worksheets, nourishment labels and other reports from the computer. Accurately tallies food selections for production staff communicating changes timely.

Notifies dietitian of necessary diet instructions, tube feedings, calorie counts, etc. Initiates and accepts input from all Dietitians as well as Food Service management. Prioritizes work to ensure menus are ready for each meal.

Demonstrates excellent customer service when answering telephone calls and receiving requests from patients and other hospital staff. Shows initiative in resolving patient and or nursing concerns independently. Demonstrates an ability to work effectively with peers, supervisors and managers as a member of the team and establishes collaborative and supportive relationships.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required. Must have good analytical skills, basic clerical skills, and be able to write grammatical sentences.

Previous related experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
