SUMMARY

The Radiation Therapist performs all radiation therapy procedures and verification/administration of therapeutic doses of radiation while under the general supervision of a licensed practitioner who is licensed, as required, to possess and use radioactive materials, for the purposes of diagnosis and/or treatment of anatomic and physiologic disorders at a technical level not requiring constant supervision and within the scope of their license.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs all radiation therapy procedures and verification/administration of therapeutic doses of radiation with appropriate application of technical and positioning protocols, safety procedures, radiation protection and proper image identifying criteria according to department policy and procedure.

  • Verifies physician orders for instructions and treatment plans and consults with the Radiation Oncologist as necessary. Explains procedure and provides education to patients and significant others as appropriate. Maintains visual and audible communication with patient during treatment.

  • Performs equipment warm up, calibration and safety check as required. Operates hospital computer system. Operates equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines for appropriate quality control.

  • Maintains a daily log of machine warm-up and quality control procedures and/or machine malfunctions. Reports to supervisor any equipment malfunctions.

  • Documents accurately and promptly in departmental records (film, file and computer): patient name, exam date, film/image markers, clinical history, complaints, allergies, etc. Prepares files for processing by the Radiation Oncologist. Responsible for department records and collects statistics as directed.

  • Reports reactions, complications, changes in condition etc. to Radiation Oncologist, physician, supervisor, peers and nursing unit as necessary.

  • Assists in Dosimetry procedures; obtains appropriate patient measurements necessary for additional point dose calculations as outlined in departmental policies and procedures. Calculates patient treatments utilizing appropriate parameters, factors and the prescribed radiation dose. Obtains accurate measurements, contours and parameters documents such in patient's chart.

  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and skills required to carry out all simulation procedures. Fabricates custom blocks, bolus, and other beam modifying devices when required and/or immobilization devices constructed from thermoplastics or other materials when required. Documents all required simulation (treatment planning) information as outlined in departmental guidelines.

  • Performs staff/student education and orientation duties.

  • Acts as a steward for quality process improvement and resource management.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    Graduate of an approved school of Radiation Therapy Technology/Nuclear Medicine Technology.

    Bachelor's degree is desirable. Minimum two years of technical experience as a Registered Radiation Therapist is preferred.

    Computer Skills

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, Excel and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is preferred.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Current Illinois Emergency Management Agency/Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IEMA/INNS) license to practice Radiation Therapy. Registration and certification through American Registry of Radiological Technologists (AART) and CPR certification are required.

    Eligibility and certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) is preferred.
