Foster Care Respite Worker

Assist House Parents in the maintenance of an environment which is conducive to positive change, growth, skill development and nurturing of Ada S. McKinley children. Provide respite services in the parents' absence and function as a support system for the parents in efforts to create consistency in the family setting.

  • Provides relief for house parent's time away.
  • Assists the Ada S. McKinley house parent by providing child care and services to the children including transportation of children to recreational activities, homework assistance and therapy, and additional supervision of the children.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children while providing child care.
  • Provides responsible "parental" supervision, monitoring, care and direction for the children consistent with the parent's methodology in the parent's absence.
  • Prepares meals, do laundry and assist the children with appropriate maintenance of the home and attend to the general orderliness and neatness as would normally occur during the shift which relief work is scheduled.
  • Maintains cleanliness of children's play area, including but not limited to sanitizing and changing crib linens.
  • Maintains organization and sanitation of donations of children's clothing and toys.
  • Ability to provide light household chores for preparation of vacant apartments, including, but not limited to laundry, mopping, sweeping, sanitation of appliances, dishes and organizing cloths.
  • Carries on the normal structure and routine in the absence of the House Parent.
  • Communicates with the Ada S. McKinley House Parents as to events during their absence.
  • Answers the telephone in the home and take messages or re-direct calls as appropriate for the Program and the rest of the Agency.
  • Complete reports and maintains records as required.
  • Establishes a positive, constructive relationship with the children through communication, interaction and role modeling.
  • Acts as a caring parental authority in efforts to aid in the children's personal growth.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all clients, staff and agency related matters and adheres to the Agency's Code of Ethics.
  • Works collaboratively with Ada S. McKinley House Parents, staff and other members of the Child Family Team.
  • Participates in ongoing training and maintain certificates such as First Aid, CPR, CPI and med administration, ect.
  • Represents Ada S. McKinley in a professional manner to the public and guest.
  • Performs other task as assigned, including the supervision of biological family visits.
  • Complies with all Ada S. McKinley Foster Care policies, state, federal, county and city laws, rules and regulations.
Job Requirements
  • Must be 21 years of age.


  • Must maintain an acceptable background per DCFS/Ada S. McKinley.
  • Previous child care experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record and proof of automobile insurance coverage.
  • Prohibited from using corporal punishment on children of any type, i.e., physical, verbal or emotional.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must comply with Mandated Reporter Laws.
  • Must have updated medical examination on file as required by DCFS/Ada S. McKinley.
  • Ability to learn and support Ada S. McKinley Foster care behavior management program.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work in an alcohol, tobacco and drug free environment.
  • Ability o work flexible hours. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential materials.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.

  • Demonstrates the experiences, beliefs, attitude and awareness that support cultural sensitivity to the client population served.



  • Ability to partner with clients individually, in family, to help them mobilize resources and their inner capacity to address problems they face.
