SUMMARY

The Teacher is responsible for providing child and adolescent patients with a continuation of their educational program through coordination of their educational activities with the patient's home and school. The Teacher is responsible for all school related activities. The position requires outreach activities to the schools and community referral sources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assesses the educational needs of each child and adolescent patient.
  • Applies child and adolescent development theory to the assessment process.
  • Identifies special educational needs.
  • Provides classroom instruction consistent with the needs of the patient.
  • Structures classroom activities based on the assessed needs of the patients.
  • Shows proficiency in understanding and working with clinical issues unique to the emotionally handicapped and / or learning disabled adolescent and child patient.
  • Checks class work, tutors and evaluates students.
  • Informs students of classroom behavior standards. Maintains behavior and dress standards consistent with those of the unit.
  • Establishes a working relationship with the patient's school.
  • Makes contact with the patient's school to determine class work to be completed and behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
  • Completes and sends academic and behavioral summaries upon discharge, when requested by the school.
  • Attends multidisciplinary staffings, as requested, to determine approaches to school related problems.
  • Attend school staffings or does a phone conference to foster re-entry or to determine appropriate placement.
  • Establishes referral source contacts to promote awareness of the hospitals services and to increase referrals.
  • Identifies potential referral sources.
  • Communicates the services of the hospital to current and potential referral sources.
  • Establishes a positive image of the hospital in the schools and community agencies.
  • Handles customer complaints immediately and uses the institutional service recovery guidelines.

    Education and/or Experience

    Bachelor's degree required. Six to twelve months previous experience required. Experience working with children, adolescents, adults and their families/significant others in Mental Health or Substance Abuse treatment field. Experience in treatment and discharge planning; developing and conducting educational groups. Knowledge of medical terms. Teacher certification and experience is required.
