SUMMARY

The Sterile Processing (SP) Technician II under general direction, decontaminates, cleans, inspects, and assembles reusable instruments and trays. The SP Technician II operates all sterilization equipment, including steam sterilizers, washer sterilizer, sonic cleaner, ETO gas sterilizer and STERRAD sterilizer. The SPD Technician II is also responsible for monitoring and entering patient charges in the Meditech system and in tracking patient care equipment charges and rental. Maintains records, supplies, and other information for instruments and sterilization methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrates understanding/knowledge of all concepts of decontamination including but not limited to: transmission pathways, cross-contamination, barrier protection, and disinfection principles; complexities of steam, ETO, and STERRAD sterilization. Continuously updates knowledge and skills.

Processes instruments, trays, and linen packs. Decontaminates and cleans all instruments and trays according to procedure. Assembles instrument trays according to departmental instrument book. Prepares packs for ED, OR, and OB per procedure.

Operates steam sterilizers and washer sterilizers according to procedure. Assembles departmental instruments, trays, and linen packs according to procedure. Runs biological spore in every sterilization load containing implants. Operates steam gun according to procedures.

Operates ETO sterilizer and aerator according to procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of OSHA standards and safety requirements for ETO sterilization. Assembles instrument trays needing ETO sterilization according to procedure. Monitors appropriate biological test packs for ETO sterilization.

Operates STERRAD sterilizer according to procedure. Assembles instrument trays needing sterilization in STERRAD sterilizer according to procedure. Monitors appropriate test packs for STERRAD sterilization.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required. Minimum two years of experience with two years on the job training in a medical facility with firsthand knowledge of sterilization and decontamination processes required.

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) preferred.
