SUMMARY

The Speech Language Pathologist I identifies the speech, language or motor/swallowing disorder of the assigned patients, and assures this data is communicated and reported. Completes patient initial assessment and other appropriate evaluations accurately and thoroughly while being audited by random observation or performance improvement monitoring. Evaluates and treats patients using the principles and practices of speech-language pathology and in accordance with the patient's age, developmental level and diagnosis. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team. Patient and family education is an integral part of the service offered.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Evaluates patients and determines causal factors of speech and language impairments for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations as prescribed by a licensed physician.
  • Gathers data related to patient's communication or swallowing disorder and selects appropriate evaluation tools for the purpose of assessment. Administers diagnostic testing procedures to determine the extent of the client's impairment and the prognosis for improvement.
  • Gathers data related to patient's communication or swallowing disorder and selects appropriate evaluation tools for the purpose of assessment while being audited by random observation or performance improvement monitoring.
  • Develops and implements individualized treatment programs for patients diagnosed as needing speech, language, or swallowing intervention by utilizing resources from other members of the health care team. Develops and maintains long-term and short-term treatment objectives for each patient. Re-evaluates and modifies treatment programs as warranted.

  • Counsels patients' family members/significant others to ensure understanding of speech, language and swallowing impairment(s) and treatment

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited institution required.

    Experience as speech therapist in health care setting preferred.

    Computer Skills

    Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word).

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Certification of Clinical Competence from ASHA, or eligibility for certification required. If not certified upon hire, must meet eligibility requirements for the prerequisite Clinical Fellowship Year "CFY" within the nine month period allowed. Current Illinois license or eligibility for licensure required. CPR Certification required.
