Zoo Animal Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Pharmacology Fellowship

One-year fellowship for veterinary anesthesiologists to gain additional expertise with zoo and wildlife species. The fellow will already have completed an anesthesia residency program and would join CZS for 12 months, learning to apply their knowledge of domestic animals to zoo animals and wildlife.

This fellow position will join the Chicago Zoological Society's veterinary department as part of the zoo animal anesthesia, analgesia and pharmacology (AAP) program. The position will be 60%research and 40% clinical training with non-domestic species. Research expectations will include completion of AAP related projects currently underway or designed by CZS staff as well as novel study design. The fellow will be trained in the anesthesia and analgesia of a core set of commonly kept non-domestic avian, reptile, fish, primate,carnivore, and hoofstock species. The position will play a key role within the Society's Center for the Science of Animal Care and Welfare, serving to actively synergize with other research projects underway in other departments. Participation in anesthesia journal club with University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine anesthesia department faculty and residents,along with participation in zoo medicine journal club with CZS veterinarians and collaborating institutions in the Illinois Zoo and Aquatic Animal Residency Program are included in this position.

This is a full-time position with salary and full benefits. A significant research budget for this position has already been secured, but it will be expected that this position also assist with identifying and pursuing outside funding for additional projects whenever possible. The term of the fellowship is one year (August 2017- August 2018). This position is well suited for a board eligible anesthesiologist who is preparing for the ACVAA examination.

The fellow will join the Brookfield Zoo's clinical medicine team, which consists of 4 clinical veterinarians (4 ACZM boarded, 1 also ACVAA boarded) an ACVR boarded radiologist and a clinical zoo medicine resident. Support staff includes 7 certified veterinary technicians and 5 other positions. Since the opening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has held an international reputation for cutting-edge animal care and wildlife conservation that continues today. CZS maintains a 20,000 square foot hospital facility outfitted with the latest medical equipment including an in-hospital CT scanner and a comprehensive in-house clinical pathology laboratory. The hospital is equipped with anesthesia equipment comparable to most specialty referral hospitals, including large and small animal anesthesia machines and ventilators, basic and advanced anesthetic monitoring devices, and blood gas analyzers. Department operations are well funded and dedicated capital funds provide for annual investment in new medical equipment.

The Veterinary Fellow, Anesthesia & Analgesia, contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society's by enabling the Veterinary Services Department to meet the highest standards of specialized veterinary care and promoting innovations in animal care and welfare. This fellowship position is intended for a veterinarian who has completed an anesthesiology residency program and is pursuing further expertise with zoo and wildlife species. This position is responsible for providing clinical anesthesia care and participating in focused clinical investigations and veterinary education programs. This position helps create innovations and excellence in programs. Clinical duties will include anesthetic management of non-domestic species during set clinical time blocks. This position does not include on-call duties.

The successful candidate will:

• Provide comprehensive clinical anesthesia and analgesia service for the CZS animal collection, including, but not limited to: induction of anesthesia, anesthetic monitoring, analgesic assessments, post-procedure care, and other related duties.
• Plan,participate, and execute research projects in line with the goals of the Veterinary Services Department's Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Pharmacology research program. Collect and analyze data. Assist with retrospective studies on peri-anesthetic morbidity as requested. Actively synergize with other research projects underway within the Grainger Center for the Science of Animal Care and Welfare.
• Participate n the mentorship and teaching of veterinary students and postgraduate veterinarians,including didactic teaching and clinical training.
• Represent the Society before other zoos; conservation, professional, and educational organizations; the media; governmental agencies; donors; and the public in a well-informed, positive, professional and responsive manner. Develop and maintain professional contacts with veterinarians of other zoos, universities and professional organizations,nationally and internationally.
• Compose articles for publication and make presentations to professional organizations as requested.
• Write grants to support individual projects and the on-going research program as requested.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following:

• Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an institution accredited or recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association required.
• Previous completion of a post-graduate residency program recognized by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia.
• Must possess strong written and oral communication skills for both formal and informal audience, good interpersonal skills, a high level of energy, be self-motivated, and have a commitment to excellence.
• Prior experience conducting research. Strong experimental design and analytical skills.
• Must have ability to work effectively with various levels of staff and to guide, nurture, and develop staff.
• Strong organizational skills and eye for detail and accuracy.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
• Demonstrated ability to represent the Society before other zoos, professional organizations, the media, government agencies, and the public in a well-informed, positive, professional and responsive manner.
• A valid driver's license is required on date of hire. If an Illinois resident, must possess a valid Illinois driver's license at the time of hire or must obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver's license is required at time of hire for out-of-state residents.
• The preferred qualifications include previous authorship of peer-reviewed scientific publications; prior experience teaching at the veterinary student and intern/resident level; and multilingual ability, Spanish fluency, is a plus.

Additional Information: This position is a regular, full-time position funded for one year, with possible renewal for a second year.
