Character Performer / Actor (Seasonal)

The Character Performer/Actor (Seasonal) contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by presenting live, scripted shows in a variety of venues as part of the 2017 "Dinosaurs and Dragons" experience thus providing an extraordinary guest experience.

The requirements for the position include:
This is a temporary position with incumbents assigned to work outdoors at a variety of locations (on stage, pathways and throughout the Zoo). This position lasts primarily between April and September depending on the needs of the operation. Must be available weekends and weekdays, any time between 9 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Some holidays, school breaks, and some evenings for scheduled events. Must be willing to undergo training, rehearsals, and follow designated Supervisor's instructions. Must
represent the Society in a professional manner at all times.
The required uniform for the seasonal actors when not in costume is khaki (tan) pants to be provided by the employee and a Society issued uniform shirt. Additional uniform shirts and approved apparel are available for purchase. The Society will issue a nametag to be prominently worn by the employee. Shoes are to be conservative, maintained in good condition, and appropriate to the employee's position and job duties. Minimal jewelry and make-up. No facial piercings or tongue piercings are allowed. Only natural hair colors are allowed (not pink, green, purple, etc.).

- Under the direction of the Interpretive Programs Supervisor, actors will portray a variety roles on a daily basis including--but not limited to--a dinosaur, paleontologist and dinosaur trainer by speaking in character, portraying a dinosaur in full costume and adlibbing using factual information during interactions with zoo guests. In the absence of the Interpretive Programs Supervisor, actors will report to either the Manager, Interpretive Programs or the Interpretive Programs Assistant.
- Actors will interact with the public as an interpreter between scheduled shows.
- Actors will perform other related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for the position include:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or (GED) equivalent required.
- Dinosaur costume requires incumbent to be no taller than 5' 6" with a shoe size of no larger than 9.5 - 10.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Must be comfortable speaking in front of the public and using a microphone.
- Must be outgoing, able to work well with others, follow directions carefully, and able to work independently with little supervision.
- Must be open to new experiences.
- Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
- Stage, dance, gymnastic, theatrical movement and/or athletic experience a plus!
- Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
