SUMMARY

The Catheterization Lab Technician provides health care services using medical imaging techniques to assist in diagnosis to demonstrate anatomy for interpretation and/or intervention as prescribed by physicians. Provides appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs diagnostic radiographic procedures. Positions patients and equipment to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort. Utilizes appropriate immobilization devices as required for performing quality radiographs.


  • Determines and selects appropriate radiographic exposure factors for each x-ray exam. Applies principles of Radiation protection to patient, staff, and others. Evaluates images for technical quality, assuring proper identification is recorded on each.


  • Selects, operates and maintains Catheterization Lab equipment. Selects and operates appropriate Catheterization Lab equipment as indicated for each exam. Assists radiologist with fluoroscopic and specialized radiography procedures. Prepares, identifies, administers, and/or assists with contrast media administration as permitted by state and institutional policy. Provides written and/or verbal communication of equipment failure to area supervisor.


  • Processes patient information and produces Catheterization Lab exam requests. Greets patients and directs patient flow. Provides instruction to patients. Processes patient exams in computer and generates associated paperwork.


  • Secures and prepares patient Radiology folders and films for interpretation. Accesses computer, card file, etc. to locate patient records. Retrieves patient folders/CD's from department. Assembles patient folder and associated paperwork for interpretation.


  • Schedules patients for all Catheterization Lab exams. Schedules patient for exams in Scheduling module according to established protocol. Provides pre-procedure instructions and preparation to patients.


  • Operates and maintains Image storage devices and associated equipment. Utilizes laser film processors to develop radiographs. Stores cardiac images to CD media as needed. Utilizes film duplicator.

  • Prepares, operates and cares for equipment used for administration of contrast agents, patient monitoring and patient imaging and surgical interventions. Produces permanent records of procedures using CD, video or other appropriate medium. Maintains inventory control of angiography and interventional supplies.



  • Performs and assists physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic invasive procedures. Assists physician during angiography, angioplasties, biopsies, drainage procedures, etc. utilizing aseptic and/or sterile techniques. Assists with insertion of invasive lines and post care.


  • Maintains knowledge of sterile supplies (catheters, wires, dilators, needles, stents, etc.) and techniques utilized for procedures appropriate to their area. Maintains appropriate knowledge to recognize anatomical structures produced and displayed on a video monitor. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency cart and medication availability.


  • Provides patient, student, and other health care professionals education relevant to the procedure. Prepares patient for procedure: providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation and minimize anxiety. Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patient during examination. Provides practical instruction for nursing and radiology students. Provides clinical instruction to student of the Radiology Technology Program.


  • Maintains accurate and timely medical record documentation as required. Correlates patient's clinical history with procedure ordered and documents on established forms. Verifies informed consent and contrast history sheet obtained for interventional and invasive procedures. Participates in department quality control and assurance duties. Enters accurate and complete information in RIS module. Documents variances to established procedures.

    Education and/or Experience

    Graduate of a two-year approved school of Radiologic Technology.

    Minimum of one year of experience as a staff radiographer and one year as a special procedures or Cath Lab radiographer or 1 year in a program specializing in angiographic and cardiac catheterization techniques

    Computer Skills

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

    Current certification in the followings: ARRT, CPR, IDNS and IEMA
