SUMMARY

Directs overall operations of Oncology Services and Radiation Therapy. Plans, administers and evaluates twenty-four hour operation of same. Oversees assignments of duties to unit personnel based on patients' needs, staffing availability, occupancy trends and competency. Provides leadership and role modeling for delivery of safe, effective and efficient patient care. Serves as Service Line Director for Oncology. Regularly reviews and revises as necessary departmental standards and ensures procedures performed comply with all Covenant and regulatory agency standards. Works with Medical Center administration and other departments to achieve the hospital goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Directs and is responsible for overall operations of Oncology Services at Presence Health Medical Center.
    • Oversees and directs unit based personnel to ensure the daily delivery of safe, effective and efficient patient care in accordance with all covenant and regulatory agency standards. Serves as a resource and role model to the staff and facilitates an atmosphere for staff growth and recognition.

    • Assesses and evaluates staffing patterns for proper utilization of personnel in relation to patient acuity levels and approves appropriate work and time off schedules. Monitors the effectiveness of the staffing plan for the patients and staff regularly.
  • Oversees department staff in planning and implementing delivery of patient care according to identified patient needs and assists medical staff in communicating and coordinating patient care. Utilizes knowledge and skills of unit and department resource personnel in planning and implementing care and resolving complex patient care problems. Coordinates development and implementation of CareMaps.
    • Determines appropriate alternative methods in delivery of care in cooperation with vice president and/or department resource personnel. Implements approved changes in patient care practices.

    • Establishes and maintains effective work teams in Oncology Services. Involves staff in participative decision making.

    • Develops long and short-term departmental goals and objectives in collaboration with the Vice President of Operations/Chief Nurse Executive and the annual business plan.

    • Plans, develops and recommends annual staffing budget. Plans capital equipment and operational expense budgets. Administers and monitors expenditures. Implements corrective action to resolve budget variances.

    • Develops effective systems to monitor all projects and activities. Communicates regularly regarding progress with Vice President, associate directors and staff members to ensure the smooth operations of departmental activities.

    • Interviews, hires and evaluates the performance of area staff in conjunction with associate director. When necessary, recommends discipline and discharge of staff. May assist in the orientation and training of staff as needed.

    • Investigates, documents and resolves complaints or incidents concerning patients, visitors, physicians and staff. Communicates with other departments as needed to resolve problems and is responsible for customer satisfaction.

    • Serves as Service Line Director for Oncology and services. Assesses internal and external environment and proposes changes in products and services. Gathers competitor information, assesses new opportunities, evaluates new technology.

    • Assists in developing and presenting in-service education programs for assigned areas. Assists in overseeing educational development of nursing students. Plans for participation of staff in Nursing Service Committees to assist in meeting the needs of patients and staff.

    • Maintains cooperative working relationships with a variety of Medical Center personnel and physicians in order to resolve problems and to enhance smooth and efficient delivery of services.

    • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate journals and other literature and attending appropriate seminars and conferences. Maintains membership and participates in professional organizations and associations.

    • Maintains working knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements relevant to area. Assists in preparing for accreditation and/or certification surveys in areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer standards
  • Understands the principles of clinical research and develops the program
    • Response to or delegates responsibility for 24 hour call regarding service line.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and/or Experience

    Work requires a professional level of knowledge of nursing theory, practice and administration at a level normally acquired through a bachelor's degree from an approved school of nursing or a bachelor's degree with associated nursing theory coursework. A master's degree is preferred.

    Minimum of five to seven years progressively more responsible related work experience with one-year concurrent experience in appropriate specialty is required. Three to five years of supervisory or managerial experience is preferred.

    Computer Skills

    General computer knowledge is required.

    State of Illinois license as a Registered Nurse; CPR certification.
