JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Chief of Security is responsible for

  • Custody and control of residents.
  • Safety of all persons and property coming into contact with the center or its residents.
  • Compliance with IDOC regulations.
  • Management of the Security Department (especially the coaching and development of department employees) and in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Provide programming that will assist residents with their efforts to reintegrate into society.
  • Ensuring security activities meet the objectives established in the annual planning process; all applicable regulatory, licensing and contractual standards – especially those of IDOC; and all security staff receive the required and desirable training and supervision.  The center is in compliance with audit standards (IDOC and ACA) at all times.         

 

  • Ensuring the Center Supervisor receives timely suggestions for enhancements and all data necessary for the annual planning process and reporting needs.
  • Ensuring the role of Duty Administrative Officer is properly carried out when assigned and the work of the Center Supervisor is carried out in his/her absence.
  • Ensuring security staff meet regularly to be informed of policy, procedures and issues; to collectively discuss and problem solve; and to make recommendations to the Chief.  (Some of these meetings are all-staff, others only direct reports to the Chief.)
  • Ensuring the security department functions as a team.  Staff members are assigned in a way that builds on the strengths of each individual. 
  • Ensuring the safety, sanitation and health of the center are maintained at a high level at all times.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Corrections, law enforcement or relevant military experience required.
  • Compliance with IDOC regulations and ACA standards.
  • Demonstrably successful management experience required, preferably has experience of managing through others.
  • Successful development of staff is required. Must be able to describe how he/she facilitated performance improvement of others. 
  • Administrative experience in a detailed oriented organization.
  • Interaction with the public.
  • Public service experience.
  • Teaching and/or training.
  • Crisis/emergency management.
  • Must demonstrate intermediate Microsoft Office computer and excellent communication skills - has clear, concise, accurate written communications.
  • Program background desirable, program knowledge required.

 

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND:

Bachelor’s degree preferred.
