Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Master's degree from an accredited school/college of nursing. Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Current license as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Illinois. Certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist by a national certifying body as approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Certified Wound/Ostomy Nurse required. Credentialed by the Department of Nursing's Office of Professional Practice and Development Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation recognition (healthcare provider level). Desired: At least two years of recent clinical experience in related area of specialty.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: A certified CNS/APN is a registered nurse (RN) and therefore, can perform all duties that are considered routine duties of a RN. In addition, a CNS/APN holds a masters or doctoral degree in a specialized area of nursing. The CNS/APN functions autonomously and collaborates with other health professionals to facilitate high quality, cost effective nursing care to patients; develop and mentor nursing staff; manage change processes; and influence health care decision-making through expert clinical reasoning, research and evidence-based practice. Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care and staff development activities across the continuum of care. Consults with other disciplines in areas of expertise. Serves as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise. Develops educational processes to meet the age specific learning needs of patients, families and staff in areas of clinical expertise. Mentors staff/students in aspects of nursing practice and patient care. Specific Performance Standards: Responsibilities: 1. Clinical Leadership - Provides direct patient care or consultation using in-depth clinical knowledge, skills and expertise across the continuum of care. Supports recruitment and retention of staff members consistent with unit and organization's human resource plan. Establishes standards and develops policies and procedures in area of clinical specialty which assure the provision of quality, comprehensive, and coordinated care. Consults with other disciplines areas of expertise. Uses evidence-based practice to guide staff in evaluating quality of care and fostering changes in practice. Communicates regularly with staff and fosters a team environment. 2. Professional - Demonstrates the following professional attributes: Integrates research based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making. Exemplifies a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation. Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, the community and nursing profession. Assumes a leadership role in professional activities and organizations. Advances the professional through presentations and publications. Seek new ideas from a wide range of sources. 3. Customer Focus - Identifies internal and external customers' expectations and requirements for assigned area of service. Actively seeks out concurrent and retrospective feedback from customers and respond to concerns by developing and implementing appropriate solutions. 4. Creative Leadership - Facilitates certifications, involvement in professional organizations, training and competency validation, and support for staff educators. Develops individualized orientation processes and continuing education programs for staff. 5. Coaching and Development: Provides just-in-time feedback to improve staff performance and self-esteem. Documents coaching discussions, develops action plans to address areas of deficiency, and monitors ongoing performance to ensure staff accountability. Collaborates with Staff Educators and NM Academy to assess staff education needs and develop programs to address them. 6. Research - Actively participates in research pertinent to area of expertise. Actively provides support to staff in the initiation and development of evidence-based practice and research projects. Actively participates in research pertinent to area of expertise. Identifies primary customer needs, develops and monitors indicators for quality of care and patient satisfaction for specific patient population. Perform and coordinated administrative and other clinical program duties as assigned or indicated. Develop and monitor indicators of quality care and patient satisfaction for a specific patient population. Skills: Analytical ability is required. Communication skill is required in order to teach and lead. Interact effectively and collaborate with others in difficult situations. Abilities: Work requires the ability to walk throughout the medical center campus and requires standing or walking most of the designated shift. Work requires the ability to visually check documents for errors; use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimens, images or reports is required. Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials, radioactive elements and/or strong, hazardous chemical agents.
