Position Description

The Marketing Communications Specialist collaborates across the organization to develop messaging and marketing strategy with a focus on the neighbors we serve. This role will be responsible for fostering community partnerships to spread awareness of the Food Bank and build relationships with elected officials and advocate for our neighbor’s needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Community Outreach and Engagement:
    • Identify and develop strategic relationships within the Food Bank 13-county service area with goal of promoting food distributions and how neighbors can access food
    • Provide marketing and awareness support for Food Bank agency network and our direct-to-neighbor programs – Mobile Pantry, SNAP and My Pantry Express.
    • Represent Food Bank at community networking events, elected official visits, county and regional gatherings to promote hunger awareness and collaborative efforts which address the needs of the food insecure.
    • Gather and report on data related to outreach efforts to inform communications strategy.
    • Manages the Food Bank’s supply of promotional materials and other resources for awareness events, such as branded tents and giveaway materials.
    • Develop presentations and prepare Food Bank staff and volunteers for external presentation opportunities at outreach events, including civic/service clubs and off-site food distribution events.   
  • Advocacy:
    • Serve on a cross-functional advocacy team with policy knowledge experts and communicate externally key messages impacting the Food Bank and our neighbors.
    • With the advocacy team and leadership, develop the Food Bank’s Advocacy Agenda annually.
    • Build relationships with elected officials and their staff and engage them in the Food Bank’s work to solve hunger in Northern Illinois.
    • Coordinate yearly advocacy trips to Washington D.C. (Anti-Hunger Policy Conference and Lobby Day) and Springfield (Illinois Hunger Commission Summit and Lobby Day), as well as in-market opportunities.
  • Other Marketing Support:
    • Provide content and strategy input for social media posts focused on reaching neighbors in need or advocacy actions.
    • Assist with managing production of communications pieces, including working with outside vendors to assure deadlines, budget and quality expectations are adhered to.

  Required Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish required
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism or similar field.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills, familiar with AP Style. 
  • Ability to build strong community partnerships
  • Ability to work on a multitude of projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, Food Banking industry and needs of our hungry neighbors.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency with technology, such as social media platforms and video storytelling a plus.
  • Design capabilities a plus.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photo copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed and some evening and weekends may be required, but the employee must be available during the "core" work hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and must work a minimum of 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status.

Position Location

This position is based out of our West Suburban Center (Geneva) location.

Travel

Local travel up to 20% of the time.
