Grounds Supervisor

Chicago ZoologicalSociety's Brookfield Zoo is known throughout the world as a leader in animalwelfare and conservation but the institution is a beautiful park-like setting whichhas an amazing 216 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, indoor and outdoorevent facilities, delicious food options at three major restaurants, and over20 different animal exhibits. Chicago Zoological Society, which managesBrookfield Zoo, has been awarded a Level II Accreditation by achievingparticular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboretaand botanic gardens, the Chicago Zoological Society is now recognized as anaccredited arboretum in The Morton Register of Arboreta. The zoo offers a walking map that identifiesits many majestic trees across the 216-acre park that is home to more than2,000 animals. The tree collection can be appreciated by guests as they strollthe zoo's expansive walking paths. In providing zoogoers up-close encounterswith nature, the Society fulfills its lifelong mission of connecting thecommunity with nature through educational programs, realistic exhibits and aconstantly vibrant and flourishing landscape, including both native andnonnative trees.

The Grounds Supervisor isresponsible for managing the daily operations and activities of the Grounds / VehicleMaintenance Work Groups to provide an extraordinary guest experience andprovides direction and supervision to staff in the performance of their dutiesand responsibilities related to the care and maintenance of the park andgrounds.

The primary duties and responsibilities include the following:
Supervise dailydepartment activities for Grounds and Vehicle Maintenance departments andpreparation of the park for guests. Oversee and handle all scheduling of work orders and work assignments,work crews, and equipment, and oversee daily work to assure quality control andproductivity met; monitor and input within Maintenance Connection to facilitatework order and service request completion; coordinate work assignments and workschedules with other departments as needed to facilitate park preparation.
Supervise assigneddepartmental staff. Work with HumanResources staff with respect to recruitment and hiring processes and makedecisions with on hiring and employment. Conduct employee appraisals and recommend necessary employment anddisciplinary actions as appropriate. Resolve employee issues and concerns. Make staffing, employment, and salary recommendations as appropriate. Maintain good employee relations, work tocreate a positive work environment, and assure adherence to labor contractprovisions. Take proper and judiciousdisciplinary measures when warranted and handles Step 1 grievances.
Manage and superviseGrounds and Vehicle Maintenance work crews and coordinate activities andservices with other departments as needed. Develop and administer inspection program, including daily fieldsupervision within the park to inspect work quality and productivity. Meet regularly with Leads and Assistant LeadGroundskeepers and assure regular and open communications within the worksection.
Set highperformance/labor standards related primarily to the measurement and quality ofwork and assure the monitoring of performance and adherence to standards. Present a commitment to CZS values and highstandards and inspire those qualities in others to the same high levels. Take a continuous improvement approach.
Maintain supply,equipment, and material inventories. Obtain bids and participate in selection of contractors for goods andservices and oversee or conduct research on new product or services. Assure the efficient and economicalutilization of materials and resources, improvement of methods, minimization ofcosts, and elimination of any wasteful practices that may be identified.
Develop, manage, andcontrol section operating budget. Recommend equipment and materials purchases in accordance withprescribed guidelines and Society purchasing policies and procedures. Maintain accurate department records,including, but not limited to records of time and attendance and staff overtimeoffered and refused. Approve electronictimecards for payroll and assures their accuracy.
Provide adequateon-the-job training and orientation for new workers, including a generalSociety orientation, and training on safety policies and procedures, andon-the-job skills and behaviors required.
Provide input intolong-range planning activities, including but not limited to identifyingdepartment needs and recommending strategies for change and improvement. Participate in capital planning and othercommittees and teams as assigned.
Effectively representthe organization and its interests to staff, volunteers, and third parties,including but not limited to vendors, contractors, consultants, and others.
Actively participatein and support employee engagement survey participation and action planningprocess. Encourage maximum surveyparticipation, share survey results with staff, and engage all staff indeveloping and implementing actions to improve the workplace and surveyresults. Monitor and document plans andprogress. Incorporate survey actionplanning into regular work group/department meetings. Hold staff accountable for implementation ofaction plans, continuous improvement, and improvement of survey results.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The requirements for
this position include the following: Associate's degree or equivalent
combination of training and experience required within the fields of landscape
architecture, turf grass management, horticulture, or forestry. Minimum of five years relevant experience in
grounds, facilities, and/or horticulture. Strong planning, analytical,
problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Flexible, team player. Requires a
persuasive, tactful, and diplomatic individual.
Participative management style with respect to problem solving, project
implementation and continuous improvement objectives. Ability to communicate and interact well with
others, including good writing, effective listening, and interpersonal
skills. Good organizational,
coordination, and prioritization skills. Must be able to adapt to changing
conditions and priorities, work with little or no supervision, meet critical
deadlines, and work effectively under pressure. Experience and/or ability to work and interact
effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

Also required: proficiency
in basic computer operation and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and
Outlook as well as maintenance tracking software packages. Ability to maintain confidential
information. A valid driver's license is
required on date of hire. If an Illinois
resident, must possess a valid Illinois driver's license at the time of hire or
must obtain one within 90 days of hire.
A valid out-of-state driver's license is required at time of hire if the
employee is an out-of-state resident.

Normal workweeks in
excess of 40 hours are not unusual.
Individual will be expected to be present and visible at events
sponsored by CZS for its crew members and other audiences.

The desirable
qualifications include certification or licensing in relevant skills/fields
desirable and multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
