General Summary:

 

Reporting to the VP of External Relations, the Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for managing and directing the organization’s internal and external communications to position Safer as a mission-driven organization promoting successful reentry through employment, a full spectrum of services, and reducing recidivism.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

            Marketing and Communications:

 

  • Work with leadership team to build an organizational brand and deliver communications that will position Safer as a strategic priority for its funding sources
  • Establish and manage implementation of a comprehensive annual communications/ marketing plan and calendar for public relations, internal and external media services, community relations, government relations, and special events
  • Responsible for the creation, editing and proofreading of communications for the organization that includes CEO presentations, annual reports, engaging newsletters, institutional collateral, and fund raising materials that tell the Safer story in a compelling manner to an updated list of  supporters
  • Maintain website, social media efforts, and marketing and public folders, on P-Drive to support the organization’s mission, goals, and objectives
  • Develop and utilize graphic design for internal and external use such as newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, updates, and reports
  • Build and foster collaborative relationships with other departments to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, products, and services      
  • Gather content and create audio and video materials highlighting Safer’s work
  • Assist with logistics, preparation and tracking of events, meetings and conferences

 

 

            Media Relations:

  • Develop and manage a media relations strategy that positions Safer as one of the nation’s leading community-based organizations in criminal justice reform, reentry services, workforce development, and community corrections
  • Manage media interviews with President/CEO and other designated spokesperson(s) and subject- matter experts coordinating local public/government relations opportunities for Safer’s initiatives/policy as well as assisting in adverse event/crisis communications
  • Create and manage media lists, write op-eds, letters to the editor, and guest blog posts; respond to incoming requests from working journalists and influential bloggers; and, utilize media monitoring platforms and return on investment metrics
  • Arrange and direct speaking engagements and press conferences for the President/CEO and others

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Ability to formulate ideas into compelling words and messaging
  • Advanced level of proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe (PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign)
  • Must be creative and able to develop materials and to articulate information clearly and concisely
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate programs and to coordinate events
  • Possess demonstrated skills in technical and creative writing
  • Experience with reporting, spreadsheets, and database systems required
  • Outstanding organizational skills and detail-orientation
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of all socio-economic backgrounds
  • Ability to manage negative press and handle public situations well
  • Ability to travel where Safer has operations

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • BA in communications, marketing, non-profit management, English, or equivalent required
  • Prior event management and communications plan experience required
  • Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ relevant experience

All positions are Full-Time (40-hours/week) and located in the Chicago Metropolitan area unless otherwise specified.
