Executive Director

Position Title:  Executive Director
Position Type:  Full time, Exempt
Location:  Central Illinois region
                 (Involves occasional travel to Springfield)
Reports to:  Board of Directors
Serves:  Feeding Illinois Association

 

The Illinois Association of Food Banks is a statewide not-for-profit organization whose mission is to increase the availability and advocate for food and funds in collaboration with Feeding America affiliated members in their united purpose to create a Hunger Free Illinois.  Executive Director shall carry out the organizational goals and objectives, policies, procedures, and administration of the Association as defined by the Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Executive Director will work through Feeding Illinois as a main partner and will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for raising food and funds in collaboration with the food bank network, statewide networking and communication, public awareness about hunger issues, and advocacy efforts.

Leadership and Management:

  • In collaboration with the Feeding Illinois Board, develop and implement organizational strategic plans that include goals in the strategic pillars of Feed (increase food and funds), Lead (increase awareness and advocacy) and Strengthen (“increase hunger relief efforts”
  • Develop and present annual ROI report for each food bank
  • Recommend the development and oversee the implementation of the association’s strategic and operating plans. Establish operational as well as financial metrics to track efficiencies and progress against strategic and tactical goals.
  • Promote a strong, effective and collegial relationship with all Board members and focus on building a culture that promotes strong relationships with, and strengthens performance of all Feeding Illinois food bank members.   Serve as an effective developer of solutions to organizational challenges.
  • Assist the Board in developing strategies and procedures to increase efficiencies of scale in the state through coordinated food sourcing, fundraising and programming.
  • Plan and participate in all Board meetings.  Plan and coordinate special Association meetings, events, conferences and retreats.  Submit an annual report of member food bank programs and progress to the Board of Directors annually.
  • Assure compliance with grant terms, conditions and reporting.  Recommend and oversee implementation and administration of key food bank programs such as SNAP.
  • Assume responsibilities for financial performance, compliance, record-keeping and reporting.  Direct the budgetary process and assure risk management strategies are in place.  Personally review all financial statements and keep the Feeding Illinois Treasurer and Board advised of financial performance, challenges and opportunities. 

Develop Advocacy Work on Behalf of the Association Goals:

  • Establish an annual advocacy plan, goals and objectives; coordinate advocacy efforts.
  • Alert the Board of Directors, Food Bank network concerning issues that call for legislative, administrative and/or social action in regards to hunger or food access.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with members of the Illinois legislature, Illinois Department of Agriculture, and state government.  Provide leadership and serve as the active chief spokesperson for Feeding Illinois.
  • Connect legislators and other government representatives with food bank executive directors to facilitate potential initiatives, training and other collaborations with officials/agencies.
  • Build relationship with Feeding America to participate in policy-making and advocate for Feeding Illinois.

Statewide Networking and Communication:

  • Develop marketing and public relations strategies; along with the Board President, serve as the chief spokesperson for the Association with the media and through public relations channels.
  • Attend and convene conferences and meetings at the national and state level.
  • Collaborate with member food banks in building regional and statewide programs, such as the Illinois Commission to End Hunger, with corporations providing food, transportation and distribution services, and cause-related marketing initiatives.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with state and national organizations that focus on people in need. Lead common concerns with civic groups in the state, and ensure that the Association is a supportive part of appropriate coalitions and networks. 
  • Maintain membership in organizations beneficial to the missions of the Association and the food banks in Illinois, including Feeding America affiliate groups and VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster)

Raise Food and Funds in a Coordinated Manner to benefit all Members of the Association

  • Assume a leadership role in the fundraising activities, including the preparation of an annual development plan for the Board approval. 
  • In cooperation with the Board, identify potential public and private funds for the operation of the Association.  Initiate grant writing, contracts and special fundraising events/projects, or work closely with other groups in initiating and implementing fundraising efforts for the Association.
  • Assist the Board in developing strategies and procedures to increase food supply, including sharing food, identifying and soliciting new food resources, soliciting donations, developing statewide food drives and effective distribution systems.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four year accredited institution in business, human services or related field; master’s degree preferred, but not required
  • A minimum of five years of related experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Direct experience working with and managing Board members
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to initiate and maintain successful collaborative relationships with other organizations
  • Knowledge, experience researching, administering, writing and receiving grants from corporate foundation, and governmental funding sources
  • Demonstrated understanding of fiscal accountability and financial management
  • Working knowledge of public relations, marketing, and community and governmental relations
  • Sound administrative skills and computer/technology proficiency
  • Frequent statewide travel and ability to spend considerable amount of time in Springfield, IL.

Education, Experience, and Training

  • Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree is highly desired
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in a nonprofit organization or with a public policy government relations position in an institution.
