Job Summary:
 
The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System is seeking an IT Technical Associate (Security Engineer).  The Security Engineer is a technical lead on the Medical Center information security team.  Responsible to ensure that clinical and financial information is secure in accordance with established standards and regulatory requirements.  Will be responsible for planning, maintaining, implementing and evaluating the secure management of electronic data whether at rest, in motion or in use.

Key Responsibilities / Duties:
 
Maintain professional expertise by attending outside seminars/courses and through the review of published literature, regulations, and guidelines including HIPAA.
 
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
 
On-call 24x7 operational support
 
Other duties as assigned
 
Monitor the network and computing assets for proper security procedures and signs of potential compromise.  Respond to security incidences.
 
Develop specifications and standards for security equipment software and procedures necessary for data security.  Evaluate and develop security systems/software, integrate and enhances security systems/software to meet operational requirements.
 
Initiate, manage, and monitor information security projects.
 
Formalize risk assessment methodology, conduct risk assessments, and develop incident response plans. Coordinate efforts of various teams and units in mitigation of identified vulnerabilities. Establish effective state-of-security snapshots on regular basis to highlight progress, vulnerability, and status of environment.
 
Lead/participate in team discussions to formulate new or enhance existing processes, policies, and standards. Ensure information security policies and processes are implemented and documented.  Assist in the development and maintenance of a security awareness program.
 
Participate in mentoring and training of the Medical Center security team staff and IS staff to ensure professional development.  Represent the Medical center security team among peers within the Campus and University.
 
Qualifications:  Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Required:
 
  1. Any combination totaling two years from the following categories
  1. progressively more responsible work experience in IT-related profession
  2. college course work in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or  its proportional equivalent​

             I 60 semester hours or Associate’s Degree equals one year
            II 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor’s Degree equals two years
2. Expertise in network security tools and techniques (firewalls, forensic tools,   intrusion detection/prevention systems, etc.)​

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related study preferred. 
  • Prefer a minimum of 4 years of IT experience.
  • Familiarity with networking protocols and technologies. 
  • Familiarity with contemporary operating systems and their administration (Linux, Unix, Windows, etc). 
  • Expertise in network security tools and techniques (firewalls, forensic tools, intrusion detection/prevention systems, etc).
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Understanding of information security principles, scripting and programming skills.
