Prep Cook, Under the Oaks Cafe-Seasonal

As Prep Cook at Under the Oaks Caf , you will timely prepare food items ordered by the Food Service outlets through the Food Service Commissary or direct production location to assure guests have a quality and enjoyable experience. You will work to accommodate the needs of customers and ensures the quality of products and high service levels for all customers.

*Must be at least 18 years of age
*One year experience as Prep Cook in a restaurant or experience in a delicatessen environment highly preferred
*Pay Rate: $10.75 per hour.


The primary duties and responsibilities include:
  • Initiate all actions necessary to carry out food preparation and presentation as instructed.
  • Using quality, rare products, prepare, assemble, package food and deliver items such as salads, sandwiches, parfaits, and other Grab 'n Go items for sale in the Food Service locations. Slice meats, cuts produce, breads, cheeses, and other items as needed. Prepare sauces, marinades and dressings.
  • Insure that all food is prepared according to standard recipe and presented in a consistent manner.
  • Assist in cleaning and sanitizing kitchen and equipment using proper personal protective equipment.
  • Wash and sanitize all dishes, pots, pans, utensils and equipment to department specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow established food service sanitation practices.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include the following:


  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Strong customer service and organizational skills required.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple projects and activities required.

  • Must be able to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers.

  • Good interpersonal skills required.

  • Must complete food handler certification and other required training within 30 days of hire.

  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
The desirable qualifications include:


  • High School graduate or (GED) equivalent preferred.

  • College classwork in culinary or other relevant subjects a plus.

  • One year experience as a prep cook in a restaurant or experience in a delicatessen environment highly preferred.

  • Knife handling skills strongly desired.

  • Basic computer skills a plus.

  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
Additional Information: This seasonal position requires the incumbent to work non-standard hours such as evenings, weekends, and holidays. Brookfield Zoo is open 365 days of the year. Work shifts are generally from 4 to 8 hours in length. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation and may be adjusted due to weather conditions or for other reasons.
