Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission is to lead the northern Illinois community in solving hunger by providing nutritious meals to those in need through innovative programs and partnerships.  Working collaboratively with a community of donors, volunteers and feeding programs, the food bank provides food across 13 northern Illinois counties each week. Northern Illinois Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has received Charity Navigator’s 4-Star rating for twelve consecutive years for its fiscal responsibility. Ninety-seven percent of the food bank’s resources go to programs that feed the hungry.

Job Description

Summary/Objective:
The Communications Manager provides strategic communications support to internal and external audiences, ensuring proper use of the organization’s branding and consistent messaging, and helps increase awareness of the food bank through community relations and assisting with media relations efforts.

Essential Functions

  • Writes, rewrites, and compiles articles for general use, including creating stories for community publications.  Writing includes profile of Food Bank programs, donors, volunteers and clients.
  • Assists Communications Director with ensuring brand guidelines are adhered to by internal and external partners.
  • Maintain media relations by responding to media requests and acting as Food Bank spokesperson.  Role includes developing media pitches for broadcast, print and online, writing and sending press releases, media advisories, letters to the editor and event listings, maintaining media contact list and tracking earned media coverage.
  • Posts media releases to local news websites, as requested by Communications Director.
  • Oversees logo and flyer approvals for the organization; updates fact sheets and brochures; manages communication team calendar.
  • Assists with managing production of Full Plate Newsletter, annual report, and other communications pieces, including working with outside vendors to assure deadlines, budget and quality expectations are adhered to.
  • Manage organization’s social media accounts.  Execute daily posts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.  Build audience through engagement with followers, maintain social media content calendar, and track social media growth through analytics. Assist with management and coordination of Food Bank blog and video projects.
  • Provide leadership as Manager of Communications Specialist position.  Role includes communicating job expectations, and planning, monitoring and appraising job performance results.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Education, & Experience     

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or similar field.
  • Five years experience in the communications or public relations fields.
  • Strong writer, familiar with AP Style. 
  • Attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills necessary.
  • Experience engaging external audiences.
  • Ability to work on a multitude of projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, food banking industry and needs of our hungry neighbors.
  • Familiarity/experience managing social media accounts.

 

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
